Historia
For fifty years, Abe and Jane have been coming to Central Park, as starry-eyed young lovers, as frustrated and exhausted parents, as artists watching their careers take flight. They came alone when they needed to get away from each other, and together when they had something important to discuss. The Park has been their witness for half a century of love. Until now. Jane is dying, and Abe is recounting their life together as a way of keeping them going: the parts they knew.

Maybe if you love poetry?
Revisado: 03-07-25
I only made it halfway through and had to file this under DNF. The repetitive style of the writing (all of the “you remember” preceding every line) and the lack of dialogue replaced by description made the characters feel hollow and the story lacked connection. I was bored and kept waiting to feel something. Based on what the book is about, I think it’s telling that as a reader I felt so disconnected from it. Just not for me.

Historia
The Precipice is a legendary family-owned hotel on the rocky coast of Maine. With the recent passing of their father, the Bishop sisters—Iris, Vicki, and Faith—have come for the weekend to claim it. But with a hurricane looming and each of the Bishop sisters harboring dangerous secrets, there's murder in the air—and not everyone who checks into the Precipice will be checking out. Each sister wants what is rightfully hers, and in the mix is the Precipe's nineteen-year-old chambermaid Charley Kelley: smart, resilient, older than her years, and in desperate straits.

And I loved The Block Party so much
Revisado: 08-31-24
It takes a lot for me to DNF a book, print or audio, but I couldn’t make it through this one. I was bored and didn’t enjoy it at all. The Block Party was a fun read with interesting characters and engaging story, so I didn’t hesitate to buy this one. I will note that I read The Block Party and listened to One Big Happy Family but I don’t think that made much difference.

January LaVoy killed it, as usual

The story was really good, but the narration made it so much more enjoyable. The little nuances of this audio performance are what brings it to the next level, particularly how she delivers funny or sarcastic dialogue. She’s crazy talented.

Historia
Our love story is simple. I met a gorgeous woman. We fell in love. We had kids. We moved to the suburbs. We told each other our biggest dreams and our darkest secrets. And then we got bored. We look like a normal couple. We're your neighbors, the parents of your kid's friend, the acquaintances with whom you keep meaning to get dinner. We all have our secrets to keeping a marriage alive. Ours just happens to be getting away with murder.

Amazing narrator. Story was so uninteresting to me. I kept waiting to be interested enough in the characters to care about the story, but it never happened.

The characters were not interesting and nothing was happening an hour and a half in, so I found it tedious and quit.

Characters lacked depth
Revisado: 05-19-24
I think this would be considered literary fiction, but the characters were hollow so the story was flat, since I wasn’t interested in any one of them. It may be a good book club pick because when I finished it I wished I could have learned what people liked about it, but I would suggest skipping this one.

I’m at a loss as to what so many people saw in this book. I almost didn’t even finish it. Flat characters and boring story line. Not what I expected at all.

The story and the performance were excellent! I wish more people would read this. If you have lost someone close to you, so much of it will resonate. If you haven’t, it will help you for when the time comes.

Maybe it’s me because people love this book
Revisado: 01-14-24
I wanted to love this so much. I have seen it on peoples best book of the year lists. For me, it just didn’t go anywhere. Like at all. I kept waiting. This narrator is one of my favorites (amazing in Tell Me Lies), but he couldn’t save this one for me. Can’t stress enough it must be me. I only wrote this for the sake of other people who feel the same and need to see this type of commentary. No disrespect intended.

Boy does this meander, but I loved it!!
Revisado: 11-06-23
This is literary fiction at its best. And with Marin Ireland reading it. I loved every unnecessary, drawn out inch of it. And I mean that with total respect because how good does a book have to be to still be so engaging, in spite of those things? Excellent.
