Historia
In the summer of 1974 a heatwave blankets Boston and Mary Pat Fennessey is trying to stay one step ahead of the bill collectors. Mary Pat has lived her entire life in the projects of “Southie,” the Irish American enclave that stubbornly adheres to tradition and stands proudly apart. One night Mary Pat’s teenage daughter Jules stays out late and doesn’t come home. That same evening, a young Black man is found dead, struck by a subway train under mysterious circumstances. Mary Pat, propelled by a desperate search for her daughter, begins turning over stones best left untouched.

Perhaps it related to me
Revisado: 11-13-23
I lived in Boston in the 70s, so I am often drawn to Dennis Lehane. The busing controversy played a smaller part than I had expected. At the time, when Louise Day Hicks got knocked into the read of her convertible by a well-pitched apple, I thought it funny. I feel ashamed about it today (but I swear I did not throw the apple). The people of Southie had every reason to complain. Judge Garrity's busing decision was among the greatest legal flaws in our history. We still suffer for it. And though the author did not tie the decision to the plot of the story, the connections are not well hidden.
In a world of intractable problems, this novel showed how governments can make mistakes that tumble on for decades.

Historia
In For the Culture, Marcus Collins argues that true cultural engagement is the most powerful vehicle for influencing behavior. If you want to get people to move, you must first understand the underlying cultural forces that make them tick. Collins uses stories from his own work as an award-winning marketer—from spearheading digital strategy for Beyoncé, to working on Apple and Nike collaborations, to the successful launch of the Brooklyn Nets NBA team—to break down the ways in which culture influences behavior and how listeners can do the same

Reads like an ad…or a job application. I cannot find an excuse for five stars. I would have preferred to simply return the book, but that seems impossible.

Historia
In this classic, the world’s expert on language and mind lucidly explains everything you always wanted to know about language: how it works, how children learn it, how it changes, how the brain computes it, and how it evolved. With deft use of examples of humor and wordplay, Steven Pinker weaves our vast knowledge of language into a compelling story: language is a human instinct, wired into our brains by evolution. The Language Instinct received the William James Book Prize from the American Psychological Association....

Dense
Revisado: 05-16-22
Some chapters of this are more detailed and technical than one can absorb in an audiobook, which made the listening a little longer than I might have liked, but it held my interest and has changed my view of language for the better, I hope. Professor Pinker’s disdain for fuzzy reasoning is always appreciated.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Compelling
Revisado: 06-22-18
I found this story, common as it is in Western Culture, to be riveting. In fairness, being a gay man, the love between two young men was a plus for me, but others may be turned off from such a story, not because of explicit sex, but because such relationships are of no interest.
Reviewers who were eager to express their discomfort amid hundreds of favorable reviews are brave—one even imagined the narrator having a sibilant "S" in Mr. Douglass's perfect English. Helpful reviews should not be about personal prejudice.
The writing is clear and the imagery simply wonderful. The reader embodied the various voices flawlessly, expressing Patroclus's timid adoration of Achilles in quiet gratitude and the Achilles voice being confident, cool, and unsentimental.
The Song of Achilles will thrill any listener who wants to be transported to another time with this classic retelling.

Historia
One of the most admired nonfiction writers of our time retells the story of one truly fabulous year in the life of his native country - a fascinating and gripping narrative featuring such outsized American heroes as Charles Lindbergh, Babe Ruth, and yes Herbert Hoover, and a gallery of criminals (Al Capone), eccentrics (Shipwreck Kelly), and close-mouthed politicians (Calvin Coolidge). It was the year Americans attempted and accomplished outsized things and came of age in a big, brawling manner. What a country. What a summer. And what a writer to bring it all so vividly alive.

Ok, notwithstanding lack of objectivity
Revisado: 11-27-14
Is there anything you would change about this book?
It's rigid point of view.
Has One Summer turned you off from other books in this genre?
No.
What about Bill Bryson’s performance did you like?
Always.
Did One Summer inspire you to do anything?
No.
Any additional comments?
Bryson bolsters his prejudgment about the authorship question with straw dogs and suppositions, but while he has added nothing of value to that scholarship, there is much to enjoy in this book about the period.

Historia
Prodigal Summer weaves together three stories of human love within a larger tapestry of lives in southern Appalachia. At the heart of these intertwined narratives is a den of coyotes that have recently migrated into the region. Deanna Wolfe, a reclusive wildlife biologist, watches them from an isolated mountain cabin where she is caught off-guard by Eddie Bondo, a young hunter who comes to invade her most private spaces and her solitary life.

Historia
An instant classic when it appeared in 1964, Herzog is the story of Moses E. Herzog, a tragically confused intellectual who suffers from the breakup of his second marriage, the general failure of his life, and the specter of growing up Jewish in the middle part of the 20th century. He responds to his personal crisis by writing a series of letters never to be sent, to friends and enemies, colleagues and celebrities, examining his life and times with wry perception and heartfelt revelation.

The media tells us that "deregulation" and "unfettered free markets" have wrecked our economy and will continue to make things worse without a heavy dose of federal regulation. But the real blame lies elsewhere. In Meltdown, best-selling author Thomas E. Woods, Jr., unearths the real causes behind the collapse of housing values and the stock market---and it turns out the culprits reside more in Washington than on Wall Street.

Important thoughts
Revisado: 12-06-09
I agree with those others who were offended by the sarcasm, which is designed for the converted and less so for the open-minded. This is my only negative: I though it patronizing.
The ideas in the book are worth anyone's interest. Unfortunately, he American system of open bribery, where corporations blatantly pour money into government, is structured to favor reckless spending. This book does not examine closely why our system is is corrupt, nor should it, but the reader might be cautioned that half-steps could be more destructive than regulation.

Masterful language

Thickly spread with self-reflection, this story seems to move slowly, but each aside engrosses the reader and moves the story along. Filled with social commentary that will sparkle for decades.
The reader is tireless and without error. He renders the first-person Charlie in a believable and consistent voice.
