Contemporary Perspective
Revisado: 03-27-25
This was an interesting series of short stories. I particularly appreciated how the author examined and described each interaction so intimately. The pandemic was the backdrop for a series of contemporary perspectives. I was glad to be introduced to this author.

Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

A reimagined Huck Finn story
Revisado: 10-07-24
James is outstanding. Jim is completely reimagined as a character, providing a profound perspective on what it must have been like to be a slave in that time period. Because the Huck Finn story is familiar and told from his perspective, it is a reminder that our very history is whitewashed. The story is disturbing but very honest and an important reminder regarding the foundation upon which our country was founded.

In 1985, Yale Tishman, the development director for an art gallery in Chicago, is about to pull off an amazing coup, bringing in an extraordinary collection of 1920s paintings as a gift to the gallery. Yet as his career begins to flourish, the carnage of the AIDS epidemic grows around him. One by one, his friends are dying and after his friend Nico's funeral, the virus circles closer and closer to Yale himself. Soon the only person he has left is Fiona, Nico's little sister.

Poignant story telling
Revisado: 04-26-24
The author did a great job capturing a sad time in our history. The story brought back many memories and also enlightened me regarding how particularly horrible it was to be gay in the early 80s.
