Historia
The summer of 1956, a brood of cicadas descends upon Providence, Georgia, a natural event with supernatural repercussions, unhinging the life of Analeise Newell, an eleven-year-old piano prodigy. Amidst this emergence, dark obsessions are stirred, uncanny gifts provoked, and secrets unearthed. During a visit to Mistletoe, a plantation owned by the wealthy Mayfield family, Analeise encounters Cordelia Mayfield and her daughter Marlissa, both of whom possess an otherworldly beauty, a lineal trait regarded as that Mayfield Shine.

A Southern Page-turner
Revisado: 01-19-25
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is well-written, and a page-turner... all wrapped up in a lovely, lyrical prose.
I am impressed with author Robert Gwaltney's storyteller and writing skills. I look forward to his next novel!

Historia
"Welcome to Rockwell Land," writes Deborah Solomon in the introduction to this spirited and authoritative biography of the painter who provided 20th-century America with a defining image of itself. As the star illustrator of The Saturday Evening Post for nearly half a century, Norman Rockwell mingled fact and fiction in paintings that reflected the we-the-people, communitarian ideals of American democracy. But who was this man who served as our unofficial "artist in chief" and bolstered our country's national identity?

Excellent!
Revisado: 09-05-24
The fact that so many people reviewing this biography were angry that the writer's findings revealed that Norman Rockwell might have been gay or bisexual just shows how far we have to go to rid this world of homophobia. There's no doubt in my mind that Rockwell was a closeted gay man. I'm so tired of the anger and ignorance.

Historia
First published in 1988 - just four years after Capote's death - Clarke paints a vivid behind-the-scenes picture of the author's life, based on hundreds of hours of in-depth interviews with the man himself and the people close to him. From the glittering heights of notoriety and parties with the rich and famous to his later struggles with addiction, Capote emerges as a richly multidimensional person - both brilliant and flawed.

Historia
This is a study of how intellectuals as a class affect modern societies by shaping the climate of opinion in which official policies develop, on issues ranging from economics to law to war and peace. You will hear a withering and clear-eyed critique about (but not for) intellectuals that explores their impact on public opinion, policy, and society at large.

Mr. Sowell basically threw a big juicy bone to conservatives. The book is very misleading. I wish that I could get those hours back that I wasted on this right-wing propaganda.

Historia
Hear singer, songwriter, and actor Nick Jonas lend his voice to the history of one of his favorite subjects: baseball. This unique story is written specifically to help you drift off, with no clear beginning, middle, or end, so you don’t need to follow the details too closely. In it, you’ll hear Nick Jonas describe how Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams reached legendary status, and how they shaped the three components of a perfect swin.

A New Favorite
Revisado: 05-14-11
I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed this audio version of My Cousin Rachel.
Daphne du Maurier is a genius at creating a complex story with a very complex Rachel (whom I do feel sympathy). The author weaves this story so beautifully not only in storytelling, but in the beautiful wording. The ending is perfect!
Jonathan Pryce is superb at narration. Through voice inflection, I think he brings a needed sexuality to Phillip that might not come through reading the book. How he changes character from Phillip to Rachel (really all of the characters) so effortlessly is amazing to me. I will definitely be on the lookout for more of his narration.

Historia
The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers.
Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures.
Together again in the house they grew up in, the Waverley sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy - if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom - or with each other.

I can compare Garden Spells to an infant, while it was cute and enjoyable, it just didn't have the teeth or communication skills for me to recommend it.

Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley...
Revisado: 12-31-10
To me, "Rebecca" was one of those stories that, "I'd seen the movie" and just wasn't interested in reading the novel. Then, I saw the novel in one of those, "One hundred books that you should read" and that sparked an interest in me. I must say I was blown away not only by Du Maurier's story telling abilities, but also her beautiful writing prose.
The narration by Anna Massey is superb. She makes the story her own. I can't imagine anyone else narrating this novel.
