So Boring I Couldn’t Finish

I’ve read every one of the previous Orphan X books with rapt attention. This one, however, was so poorly done I can’t believe it was conceived by the genius mind of Gregg Hurwitz. It’s not about protecting an innocent who desperately needs Violator’s help, rather it’s about some associate of his (Tommy) who for some poorly explained reason is compelled to kill him. On top of that, more time in the first half of the book of is spent on the unrelated conversations and doings of Tommy’s uninteresting associates. I stopped listening with over 8 hours left. Maybe it got better but I decided to go watch my lawn grow instead, and it’s made of artificial turf.

BTW, Scott Brick was great as always. Unfortunately he was unable to save this turkey from the incinerator.

The story was fairly simply written, in uninspired plain English. The first 3/4 of the book was a boring account of boring people doing mostly boring things. The last 1/4 was more exciting and suspenseful but not really worth the slog it took to get there.

Good story but WAY too many characters - I had a hard time keeping track of them all. The story was so convoluted with so many theories postulated by the two detectives that I again had a hard time keeping up. Finally, there was so little action, the story consisted mostly of Decker and White talking about possible solutions to the several murders.

How can you go wrong with three greats together: Michael Crichton, James Patterson, and Scott Brick. The book was fast moving, Had amusing characters, and the extensive research made it feel realistic. May Michael Crichton rest in peace!

Well developed story with many twists and turns. I enjoyed the setting. Characters were interesting but some of the personalities could have a bit better developed. Narration was good.

I liked the use of complex magic methods by the killer and Deavers cleverly intertwined descriptions of actual use of performance of tricks with killer’s use for killing and evading capture.

The story good, though dragged a bit at times. One big flaw was the prime antagonist who who was supposed to be an amazingly bright strategist but had an idiotic obsession with worms and “cringiiness.” This conflict was distractingly unrealistic and challenged the notion that Rhymes was this great criminologist. The narrator was very good 80% of the time but his voice got the “bad guys” was grating comical and belonged better in a cartoon than a serious book.

The story was a a bit different than most I read, but I enjoyed it. The end sucked, though, because it dealt with an entirely different crime committed by characters not part of the main story; it just came out of left field and should have stayed there.

Doc is a very compelling character full of warmth and compassion hidden beneath a tough exterior. This book was a bit too much conversation at the expense of what could have been a more complex and compelling story.

The author, Barry Eisler, created great characters, a very good story, and his narration rendered the characters with interesting depth and personalities. I particularly enjoyed Dox and look forward to reading Amok, which features Dox.
