I enjoyed this story, as it morphed from a sci fi to a fantasy tale. I particularly enjoyed the sections in which the main protagonist was a woman. This has been done before by the author, but not always equally well. In this case it was done well and was particularly seamless and convincing. In fact, more female characters of importance than usual for this author, and nicely done.

Supercilious narrator

I found myself distracted by the sort of precious, supercilious tone of the narrator, which did not enhance the experience for me. Learn from my mistake and listen to the sample before deciding to buy.

Armitage is the master

Having heard this, I'm sure I will always hear Richard Armitage's voice in subsequent reading. Marvelous voice acting!!!

Formulaic elements

I liked Armando Duran's performance, but the story and writing did not impress me as previous works of Irving's have done. In particular, there was a feeling of short-cutting in the writing style. It would almost be worth biying the Kindle edition to be able to run a search on how many times the phrase "...and that was all ______said", or variants thereof, were used. It seemed like it happened over and over again, and by the time I was about 80 pages in, I began to intone the phrase along with the narrator. It was that repetitious and predictable. I didn't feel it added value to the story; l wished it had, but no.
I am a big fan of Irving's work, but it can be uneven, and this is not one of his notable works in my opinion.

Highly satisfactory

William Dufris is the perfect narrator for the main character of Erasmus. He is absolutely wonderful in this role, and shows a lot of scope. All the other characters are voiced convincingly and well, too.
The book is fascinating, a vision of an alternate universe and a compelling train of events that leads to unexpected places! So worth it. One of my most highly recommended audio books.

Not up to snuff

In this book, O'Brian feels like he's losing steam and enthusiasm for the series. The plot really seems to go nowhere fast. At the end, I wondered why he, and I, bothered! I'm not sure now whether I'll go on to read subsequent books in this series.

For one thing, I am not sure how entertaining it will be to watch the characters age out - at the rate that O'Brian is aging them between books, they'll be true geezers by the end of the series, if they can even make it that long!

Vance is wonderful

This series is entertaining and enjoyable. The characters are well developed and the nautical and military details are interesting. Simon Vance does a fantastic job as reader. The books in this series are a bit 'fluffy', there are no great philosophical issues being explored here...perfect for a beach listen or a tedious flight.

Insufferably smug narrator. Intolerably pretentious writing style - like going to a minor hell where you're forced to hear the inner thoughts of someone who isn't very interesting. Telling, telling, and not showing. God. Somebody just shoot me now. Why did I download this thing?
