Writing, enjoyable overall
Revisado: 09-13-24
So refreshing to have a detailed, fictional, interesting story. No agenda pushing that seems requisite for American publishers these days on their books as products on what they think is edgy, a hot topic, etc. I liked the cultural references and will read more.

Historia
Thespian sleuth Charles Paris is his own worst enemy, a louche lush who can resist anything except temptation - especially in the form of women and alcohol. Estranged from his long-suffering wife, Frances, his personal life is shambolic, and as an actor, he's C-list at best. But he does have a talent for solving murders - which is just as well, because wherever he goes, someone seems to drop dead.

The Civil War: A Narrative, Volume 1 begins one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. All the great battles are here, of course, from Bull Run through Shiloh, the Seven Days Battles, and Antietam, but so are the smaller ones: Ball's Bluff, Fort Donelson, Pea Ridge, Island Ten, New Orleans, and Monitor versus Merrimac.

More about the author than the subject
Revisado: 03-15-24
I read it bc it was set in NC, to understand rather than gawk..Limited supporting facts/clarity about SSRI withdrawal and Huntington's related to violent behavor. Could have expounded on poor mental health compounded by social factors as part of the solution to be addressed. Never had the whole story of the murder. The ability to function the day after for a week as a doctor is puzzling if causes are those mentioned. The takeaway is that he should not have been allowed to represent himself and mental health care is woefully understaffed, duh.

Not for me
Revisado: 03-07-24
Sci fi fan, thought the alternate universe theme would be interesting. It has the seemingly requisite crude language ,which knocks the intelligence factor down @ 50% for me and is just an unintriguing story. He threw in some descriptions of theories, but the book didn't work for me.

Letdown after liking the first in series
Revisado: 08-01-23
I really liked the first book in the series, where Harry Grimm is new to "the North", and enjoyed the writing describing the people and their ways.So I read this one, thinking it would continue.; a detective story fleshed out in its surroundings. But this feels rushed and crude. If you like graphic descriptions of death, decay and all its accompanying creatures, this is for you. No character development, just "this happened, then that happened."I thought I had found a new series, but this one is not for me.

Now nearing 30 years of age and having rejected several proposals, forever in the hope of finding someone better, her future prospects are threatened.
