Not one of Barnard's best. The fight scene near the end was ridiculous and boring.

Historia
Set in a lovingly evoked Brooklyn just after the end of World War I, The Haunted Bookshop cleverly juxtaposes a pair of middle-aged bookshop owners and two young lovers with a nest of German saboteurs, complete with mysterious clues, red herrings, blushing romance, derring-do, a desperate race to the rescue, and an explosion. More important, the novel is an eloquent hymn to the bookseller’s trade and a fervent plea for the revivifying and redemptive power of literature.

This is a sweet story about a man and his love of literature and the people who support him and find love in the haunted bookstore.

Not a Great Narrator for Voices
Revisado: 02-10-16
What did you love best about The Tiger in the Smoke?
The story is Margery Allingham's best of all the Campion series.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Albert Campion because the entire story revolves around him.
What didn’t you like about David Thorpe’s performance?
Anyone who knows these characters knows that DDCI Luke is a big man, over 6' 3" and educated. Mr. Thorpe makes him sound like a 12 year old cockney boy - I had to go back to reading the book rather than listening to the audio.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Could not listen to another minute after hearing DDCI Luke's "voice." But I wanted to finish 'reading' the book in one sitting, yes.

Historia
Way back during the Crusades, Richard I presented the Huntingforest family with the tiny Balkan state of Averna but since then the kingdom has been forgotten, until circumstances in Europe suddenly render it extremely strategically important to the British government. They hire unconventional detective Albert Campion to recover the long-missing proofs of ownership - the deeds, a crown, and a receipt - which are apparently hidden in the village of Pontisbright.
