Historia
Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die.

A Revalation
Revisado: 12-07-23
This is a beautiful and necessary book. It brings home the notion that we are more than machines. Allopathic medicine tries to understand us from a biomechanical viewpoint -- but more accurately, we are biospychosocial beings. This comes into play for many at the end of life. This book is especially valuable to health care professionals, be they doctors, nurses, social workers, CNAs aides, etc. It is also beautifully read by the author. It's a true gem!

Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

Mad about Mad Honey
Revisado: 04-19-23
Horace wrote that great art should be a blend of the useful and the sweet (rough translation). Mad Honey is such a work. The story, the narration... the whole project was a gift to the reading world. It will change minds. Like honey, it is sweet and it endures.
Thank you, JP and JFB.

A pleasure to listen to.
Revisado: 04-03-23
This book was a great gift from Audible. It addresses a difficult topic with sensitivity and wisdom. It took a minute or two to get used to the accent of the reader, but after that it was a pleasure to listen to. This is a memorable book that I enthusiastically recommend.

Short and worth listening to
Revisado: 02-27-22
This is a short reading, plus a discussion with the author. Her insights into writing and human nature are brilliant. The reading of an excerpt from the book was not well rehearsed, but that did not detract from the value of this Audible original.

Now in his sixties, big-wave surfer Joe Sharkey has passed his prime and is losing his “stoke.” The younger surfers around the breaks on the north shore of Oahu still idolize the Shark, but his sponsors are looking elsewhere. One night, while driving home from a bar after one too many, Joe accidentally kills a stranger near Waimea, a tragedy that sends his life out of control. As the repercussions of the accident spiral ever wider, Joe's devoted girlfriend, Olive, throws herself into uncovering the dead man’s identity and helping Joe find vitality and refuge in the waves again.

No Ka Oi
Revisado: 06-04-21
This is a well-written captivating story about one misfit haole in Hawaii. Much of it rings true. The insights into adverse childhood experiences were fascinating. The reading was very good except that the narrator mispronounced some Hawaiian and pidgin words. "Hui" came off like "whee" -- but no madda -- can understand anyway -- the reader really gave it his heart. The producer could have found one local to help him with a few terms. Theroux got the surfer culture right. As an outsider, with a love of the aina, perhaps he could present it better than one local braddah; just like Hunter Thompson might have.

A Seamless Melding of Humanism and Science
Revisado: 11-22-20
I loved this book! The characters are alive. Nina (the nurse), Luca (the patient), Joseph (the bone marrow donor) and so many more.
The story has many layers -- from the science of bone marrow transplantation, to complex family relationships in Italy and Brooklyn. The subplots will resonate with me for some time.
I give this the strongest recommendation!
