My least favorite Penny Reid
Revisado: 09-06-23
The whiny main character was too much for me. I love Penny’s strong but honest female leads, but this one is so insecure and whiny and self sabatoging, I’m struggling to get through the whole book. I just want to scream at her, “ugh, woman up!!”

Lots of threads to follow
Revisado: 04-13-22
There was a very clear distaste of Americans (often rightly so), which was a little off putting. There was also a LOT happening at once amongst many characters stories. It could have been two separate books with parallel timelines, that’s how much was happening. It was a fun listen overall though.

Historia
Witch Cerise Bishop doesn’t have time - or patience - for love. But when she’s saved by a hot alpha wolf, things change. When Axel barges into her home to warn her that she’s on a group of witch hunters’ kill list, she doesn’t believe him. Forget how sexy he looks or how much she’d like to see him naked, she doesn’t need a savior. Alpha wolf Axel Barrick wanted to crawl home to bed after a series of night shifts, not take a witch to a safehouse. But his sense of justice rules him and he goes to fetch Cerise. He’s intent on saving her by bringing her to the pack lands.

Love an alpha...but no
Revisado: 10-21-20
I love a good alpha story as much as the next person, but this one didn’t sit right with me. The MC is constantly bossing the witch around and she just acquiesces. Then she’s always apologizing and being self deprecating when she doesn’t need to be. Woman up, honey! And even the alphas compliments are jabs at her character, like “you’re still an impossible witch.” He was always saying “you’re mine” like it was a foregone conclusion but not once did the witch ever say that he was hers too. A mutual ownership/love makes sense, but this felt very one sided and kinda made me hate men. Didn’t love.

Historia
Jerrek Valsys was quite literally cursed. In life and in love. With no wife to see him through those long lonely nights and no way to help tame the beast that currently resides inside him, he'd spent years waiting on his mate with a glowing rock to show up. Seriously. He had. Because the prophecy told him so. But when his beast comes out and finds its mate, he may have to forget about that whole prophecy thing. Even if it means he has to give up his crown as the Fae King.

Meh Narrator
Revisado: 10-15-20
The narrator was just meh. She read like she was bored. And on all the parts that involved singing she just read them. Not even an effort. It didn’t totally kill the story, but had me wishing for a better read through at many points in the book.

Historia
Heartsick about her on-again, off-again boyfriend-werewolf, Fiona O’Malley is struggling to make the hardest decision of her life - if she should break up with him once and for all. Though she knows he loves her and is sweet, funny and kind, he’s just not the sort of guy you can depend upon, especially in the romance department. Immortal Matthew “Matty” Hyland is crazy in love with Fiona. He’d do anything to make her happy. Though he tries repeatedly to be there for her, things just keep getting in his way.

My least favorite Nocturne Falls Universe Story
Revisado: 09-06-20
I have listened to almost every Nocturne Falls and Nocturne Falls Universe book, and this is by far my least favorite. So much so that I couldn’t even finish listening to it. The main characters are whiny wishy washy babies who can’t own up to their own mess and handle it, even when people around them are spoon feeding them solutions. That doesn’t jive with the whole supernaturals persona that this series has built up (bada$$, strong, determined). Also, it doesn’t really take place in Nocturne Falls, instead mainly features Underworld, some nearby-ish alternate dimension place. It has none of the locals I’ve come to love in it, none of the shops all the other characters frequent. It’s also pretty dark (as is her other Nocturne Falls book). Like talk of trading women for a bounty, torture, etc. not my cup of tea at all, and feels really out of line with this Universe. Would not recommend.

Good, but not my favorite CJ Archer book
Revisado: 06-17-20
I’ve listened to all of CJ Archers audiobooks and this is my least favorite. I felt like the sexual attraction between the two main characters was soo forced. At every turn they were trying to jump one another or touch each other’s most private places in a time when that was not socially acceptable in public. It just felt forced. I wanted more witchcraft, more spying intrigue and more romance, not just sex.

On Hallowe'en night, Mathilda Honeycutt finds out she's a SuperWitch. Not the modern, hippie kind...the real, wand-wielding, pixie-dust kind. After a life devoted to retail and coffee drinks, Mathilda is thrown into the secret world of witches, werewolves, vampires, faeries, you name it, it exists! As Mathilda discovers her magic, she also discovers she's prophesied to save the world. The problem is, she'd rather spend her time on online auctions bidding on fabulous designer shoes.

Couldn’t handle the diary format
Revisado: 05-21-20
The format of this book is unfortunate. Listening to someone read their diary is hard to keep up with, one sided and unbearably uninteresting. The story has soo much potential, but the format ruined it for me. Only made a few chapters in.

Historia
For centuries, the vineyards at Château Renard have depended on the talent of their vine witches, whose spells help create the world-renowned wine of the Chanceaux Valley. Then the skill of divining harvests fell into ruin when sorcière Elena Boureanu was blindsided by a curse. Now, after breaking the spell that confined her to the shallows of a marshland and weakened her magic, Elena is struggling to return to her former life. And the vineyard she was destined to inherit is now in the possession of a handsome stranger.

Wine + fantasy lovers rejoice...everyone else, move along
Revisado: 10-17-19
I love a good fantasy novel, but this one is squarely for the wine lovers. If you love the flowery language of the sommelier, you may well love this book. The author spent an inordinate amount of time describing wine, vineyards and inanimate things than she did developing the characters. The explanation of their actions were left to unknown/unknowable descriptions like “sacred pose”...what is that? I found myself wanting better people descriptions so I could envision the characters more clearly.
And I’m not sure if it was the narrator or the story, but it was slow! It also felt weird that they were in France and the narrator used a superb French accent for certain words, but not all dialogue. That would have made the story richer in my estimation.
Overall, a listenable tale, but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it.

Falling in love was never in the cards for Leonidas. An angry witch made sure of that - if he loses his heart, he loses his life. But the treaty guaranteeing peace will die with him, unless he wins the true love of a woman and she bears him a dragonling. When a fiery redheaded witch comes along with plans of her own, 500 years of guarding his heart and opening his bed might not be enough to protect him. Because love is magic...and the fate of the mortal and immortal worlds depends on Rosalyn and Leonidas not only opening their hearts but surviving a love that's true....

Good story
Revisado: 09-23-19
Kept me listening and on the edge of my seat. I have to say, though that Roger Wayne is NOT my favorite. His female voices are too affected and high pitched. One of his male voice, for Lucien I believe, sounds like The Godfather. It was so distracting and kind of disappointing after having Joe Arden for the early books. Otherwise a great story!

No. Just no.
Revisado: 09-11-19
I tend to finish listening to books no matter how much I’m not feeling it, but I couldn’t with this one. I love Penny Reid’s other books, but this one was not great. That Annie’s boss changed her dress and she just went along with it. That her boss basically pimped her out...and she went along with it. The dominant/submissive stuff with Ronan...and she just went along with it. I couldn’t even finish the book because I found myself rolling my eyes and feeling annoyed with the characters and the storyline.
Not to mention that George Allen’s narration was laughable. His accents made me cringe and distracted from the story. He didn’t capture the emotion as described (ie growls, whispers, etc). I felt like I was listening to a cartoon when he spoke. Lucy Rivers was great and I could have listened to her the whole book...save the story.
Overall, don’t waste your time. Read the Knitting in the City series instead. Much more enjoyable.
