This is a fascinating topic and she is an interesting subject. It’s a fairly brief book to begin with. Much of it is expressing in different words how depraved she was in the same basic ways. A bit short on specific incidents. Narrator seems consistent with the “meh” level of research and writing.

I was captivated by the candor of this author’s experience being taken hostage by the Sioux. Much disturbing yet fascinating detail.

I enjoyed this - but - the severely abridged version here was disappointing! The original book was so good. Why doesn’t the title page advise this is condensed edition? It should say so!

I found this biography to be informative and adequately written - not great - but the author did his homework.
UNFORTUNATELY,
I cannot be the only person who found it difficult not to be distracted by the 1950s voiceover style of this narrator. He often made the author’s perfectly palatable writing sound overblown and tedious.
I found the narrator to be out of touch with the nature of the content he was conveying.
It was as if the book were written in ALL BOLD CAPS.
It’s a captivating story if you’re prepared to listen to this guy bark it out at you.

I love this Award winning trilogy of books by Conrad Richter. I’ve read them all. He captures so vividly and touchingly, the early 19th century development of a community in the Midwest. Characters and conditions come to life with Richter’s beautiful writing.
Unfortunately- this narrator - does not do the material justice. He seems to have put on a “Woodsy” character voice with a sing songy style that - to my mind - diminishes the seriousness - and humor - in the material.

A very shallow rendering of a very deep story.
If you can get past that - you may love this book!

I’d love to dive into “The Fields” next - but I’m not sure I will if it’s the same narrator.
