Historia
The Algerian War lasted from 1954 to 1962. It caused the fall of six French governments, led to the collapse of the Fourth Republic, and came close to provoking a civil war on French soil. More than a million Muslim Algerians died in the conflict, and as many European settlers were driven into exile. From the perspective of half a century, it looks less like the last colonial war than the first postmodern one.

A chronology relevant to everything happening today in cultural and independence conflicts
Revisado: 10-25-24
A simply engulfing read. It is shocking to read that basically everything in today’s conflicts (eg the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and attrition) already happened and its lessons are never learned.

Historia
Once in a generation, a historian will redefine his field, producing a book that demands to be read or heard - a product of electrifying scholarship conveyed with commanding skill. Diarmaid MacCulloch's Christianity is such a book. Breathtaking in ambition, it ranges back to the origins of the Hebrew Bible and covers the world, following the three main strands of the Christian faith.

Historia
In this iconoclastic and provocative work, leading scholars Israel Finkelstein and Neil Asher Silberman draw on recent archaeological research to present a dramatically revised portrait of ancient Israel and its neighbors. They argue that crucial evidence (or a telling lack of evidence) at digs in Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon suggests that many of the most famous stories in the Bible - the wanderings of the patriarchs, the Exodus from Egypt, Joshua’s conquest of Canaan, and David and Solomon’s vast empire - reflect the world of the later authors.

It is quite amazing to read through just how much the Nazi regime managed to do with the Sword of Damocles constantly swinging above its head. These are lessons that we should heed today.

Historia
Sand, iron, salt, oil, copper and lithium. The struggle for these tiny, magical materials has razed empires, demolished civilizations, fed our greed and our ingenuity for thousands of years. But the story is not over. We are often told we now live in a weightless world of information but in fact we dug more stuff out of the earth in 2017 than in all of human history before 1950. And it's getting worse. To make one bar of gold, we now have to dig 5,000 tons of earth. For every tonne of fossil fuels, we extract six tonnes of other materials - from sand to stone to wood to metal.

Historia
Ancient Egyptian civilization is so grand our minds sometimes have difficulty adjusting to it. It lasted 3,000 years, longer than any other on the planet. Its Great Pyramid of Cheops was the tallest building in the world until well into the 19th century and remains the only Ancient Wonder still standing. And it was the most technologically advanced of the ancient civilizations, with the medical knowledge that made Egyptian physicians the most famous in the world.

This is a wonderful overview of the great Egyptian culture and history. A lot of fun to fill in gaps about where things come from, the Egyptian’s influence and history in general. A little biased at times, but that only goes to show how much passion and love Bob Brier has for Egypt.

It shows that a lot of thought was put in this story about the extent of where the climate crises can go. That said, it didn’t click with me line the world building and depth of philosophical questions one gets with science fiction.

Historia
In The March of Folly, two-time Pulitzer Prize winning historian Barbara Tuchman tackles the pervasive presence of folly in governments through the ages. Defining folly as the pursuit by governments of policies contrary to their own interests, despite the availability of feasible alternatives, Tuchman details four decisive turning points in history that illustrate the very heights of folly in government.

One more way to look at history
Revisado: 01-24-23
A very interesting and well structured summary of DNA based research. The book highlights the current findings and understanding that there is a lot more recombination and effects of those past few thousand years than was and probably is taught in school. Lastly, I appreciate the fact that David Reich openly talked about his errors and that he leaves room for other views that are not his own. Very interesting indeed!
