Historia
The world has been indoctrinated with the false notion that narcissism is the result of a bad childhood. It’s as if narcissists have been granted immunity from responsibility. Mental health professionals - and the general public alike - seem more than willing to offer narcissists a perfectly convenient scapegoat: trauma. The goal of this book, using the most recent empirical evidence on the etiology and treatment of narcissistic personality disorder - is to dispel the widely held and already discredited myth that narcissism is the result of childhood trauma.

Excellent Summation of Narcissm
Revisado: 02-10-25
The focus on credentials for treatment was spot on. I have family members who were given "treatment" by religious or unqualified "therapists" who caused great harm and exacerbated the trauma.

Historia
Growing up in a deeply evangelical family in the Midwest in the ‘80s and ‘90s, Sarah McCammon was strictly taught to fear God, obey him, and not question the faith. Persistently worried that her gay grandfather would go to hell unless she could reach him, or that her Muslim friend would need to be converted, and that she, too, would go to hell if she did not believe fervently enough, McCammon was a rule-follower. But through it all, she was plagued by fears and deep questions as the belief system she'd been carefully taught clashed with her expanding understanding of the outside world.

Honest, Helpful, Hopeful
Revisado: 07-05-24
As a female Boomer who first encountered fundamental pentecostalism in my teens (KC & christian school), I never stopped openly (respectfully) debating my faith. The Vietnam War, Civil Rights, and women's roles. This book validates with much-needed introspection and open perspective. This is not a new (lonely) experience for many of us, just more exposed than in the past. The term "faith shifting" was new to me and appropriate to describe decades of reflections and growth.
This is the best book from a first-hand narrative (my opinion) with history and valuable insights. I just wish I could have met her fascinating grandfather and discussed philosophy.
I know many, many who have struggled from religious toxic patterns and would benefit by reading to the end. Almost cried tbrough Chapter 13. Take breaks, if you must, to process. The last chapter was as valuable as the first.

Revisado: 01-14-24
This book clarified much nuance, while confirming public reporting. FOX has steadily eroded family, community, and national bonds. Those who viewed, collaborated, or celebrated the rise of "alternate facts" on FOX, and other outlets of extremism, bear direct responsibility for our current challenges. It is, however, up to all Americans to protect our rights and imperfect, but irreplaceable democracy.

Historia
In 2006, Kristi Coulter left her cozy but dull job for a promising new position at the fast-growing Amazon.com, but she never expected the soul-crushing pressure that would come with it. In no time she found the challenge and excitement she'd been craving—along with seven-day workweeks, lifeboat exercises, widespread burnout, and a culture driven largely by fear. But the chase, the visibility, and, let's face it, the stock options proved intoxicating, and so, for twelve years, she stayed—until she no longer recognized the face in the mirror or the mission she'd signed up for.

Not Just an Amazon Story
Revisado: 09-22-23
I started listening to this account to better understand the culture of Amazon, the nature of assimilating to its corporate "hamster wheel" and, in the process, better support a dear friend who also courageously moved her family across the country to work for Amazon. I was awe before; my respect has only grown exponentially.
Little did I know that this memoir would also tell my professional story, as educator and counselor. The final chapter (and all others) drew me in, exposing how universal the Amazon experience is in reality.
This is a must-read! I laughed outloud many times and learned so much.

Historia
There is no better guide than Paul Krugman to basic economics, the ideas that animate much of our public policy. Likewise, there is no stronger foe of zombie economics, the misunderstandings that just won’t die. In Arguing with Zombies, Krugman tackles many of these misunderstandings, taking stock of where the United States has come from and where it’s headed in a series of concise, digestible chapters. Drawn mainly from his popular New York Times column, they cover a wide range of issues, organized thematically and framed in the context of a wider debate.

Revisado: 03-30-21
This book is compelling and relevant to the current political landscape. Paul Krugman is relatable and respectful of those who have interest and background, but not expertise, in the field of economics. I listen to/read any interview, podcast, or book from Krugman and never fail to get a master class in economics, with essential historical context.
