Example: The author claims "July 18, 1812 president James Monroe declares war on Great Britain" ... except James Madison was president on July 18, 1812. Monroe wouldn't sit in the president's seat for another four years, being elected in 1816, and he never declared war on Great Britain. This huge oversight is glaring for anyone who is a scholar in early American history, and as this book deals with that topic it should be an incredibly embarrassing mistake by both the author and his editor.

Another: Later on in the book the US Army under the genocidal lunatic Sherman is downplayed as an exterminating force for the Bison, which is factually false. He explains it as a contentious point among historians, which is simply not true. The fact that powder and shot was freely handed out from military supplies to private citizens declaring their intent to unlawfully hunt the animals in restricted areas, along with refusal to stop them from returning with their illegally sourced products, taken in concert with numerous speeches, writings, and efforts to involve any and everyone in the bison extermination as a means to finish the genocide of Native Americans indicates the author has yet again substituted fiction for fact. No mention of Grants refusal to pass protective legislation for the poor animal in the 1870s in mentioned, and the impression left is that there was no effort to stem the slaughter prior to the mid 1880s, which is also false.

I wouldn't quote a single word from this book without fact checking it twice as neither the author nor his editor/publisher seems to have done even a basic level of verification before publication. Had that happened, it would be a five star rating.

Great book, as all parts of this series are. Deals with the first presidency and Jeffersons live during that time. Interestingly, Malone addresses the Hemings relation in Appendix II, likely coinciding with the popularity gained by the accusation of TJ fathering multiple Hemings children gaining traction about the time this was to be published, however he deviates from the theory strongly presented by Fawn Brodie in her groundbreaking work and suggests either Peter or Sam Carr had the relation with Sally, which is not the current consensus of Jefferson scholars based on the 1998 Fields DNA test. Readers would be best informed by following this series with a more modern effort by scholars like Annette Gordon-Reed, Peter Onuf, or Andrew Jackson O'Shaunesy (all of whom have addressed it and all of whom work with or for The Thomas Jefferaon Foundation, the operator of Monticello and The Jefferson Library, located just off the Monticello campus).

The only problem with this volume is simply that the recording skips every so often, leaving a few words out of the sentence as if your book had the edge of some pages clipped off. This is very frustrating to have happen when pursuing a 3300+ page work 4/6 of the way through the series, and even more so when one purchased the recording but did not receive the entirety of it... like a steak dinner at the favorite restaurant served with a bite taken out of it.

Racist author who thinks genocide is "great"

Not very good, wanders through many story lines and fails to tie them together. Also, the author refers to some military actions against Indian tribes as "great" and worthy of great men like "sherman" who openly committed genocide in an effort to exterminate an entire ethnicity. That wasn't great, nor was the open slaughter of women and children, yet this author praises those tactics. This author really needs to write less and read more. Very disappointed, one star, will not read anything more by this genocide glorifying idiot.

Not as captivating as the first volume but excellently researched and thoroughly presented. Another great work on Jefferson by Malone we should all be grateful for.
