Three times
Revisado: 05-14-23
I’ve listened to this book three times now and I’m tempted to start at the beginning again right now. I cannot pinpoint why I enjoy it so much. The writing is good, the characters are people you root for and wish were real so you could look up how they’re doing today and photos of them from the past. Plus, the narration is perfection. The voices are perfect for the characters they read. I’d highly recommend to anyone.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

I love this book, both on paper and as an audiobook. It’s a great one to read at least twice because knowing the ending really helps you see how all the pieces get you there. Brilliantly written!

Few journalists working today have covered Donald Trump more extensively than Maggie Haberman. And few understand him and his motivations better. Now, demonstrating her majestic command of this story, Haberman reveals in full the depth of her understanding of the 45th president himself, and of what the Trump phenomenon means.

An excellent listen!
Revisado: 11-09-22
Maggie is one of the best at what she does. I had to force myself to purchase a book all about Trump, but her excellent reporting, attention to detail, and fair account of Trump’s story was extremely engaging and taught me new things about a story I thought I already knew from the real-time media coverage.

Being immortal is not all it once was. Yes, the 12 Greek gods of Olympus are alive and well in the 21st century, but they are crammed together in a London town house: and are none too happy about it. Even more disturbing, their powers are waning.

Historia
In Boyfriend Material, Luc and Oliver met, pretended to fall in love, fell in love for real, dealt with heartbreak and disappointment and family and friends...and somehow figured out a way to make it work. Now it seems like everyone around them is getting married, and Luc's feeling the social pressure to propose. But it'll take more than four weddings, a funeral, and a bowl full of special curry to get these two from "I don't know what I'm doing" to "I do". Good thing Oliver is such perfect Husband Material.

Meh
Revisado: 08-18-22
This book is exhausting, a lot like Boyfriend Material was, but without the payoff. Boyfriend Material balanced the tedium of Lucien’s back and forth and constant self-doubting with flirtation, anticipation, and the type of cheesy-payoff ending that people want from books like this. Husband Material is just a slog. You’re constantly annoyed by the characters and the ending tries to make a point or be thought provoking in a way that sort of misses the point of listening to books like this - books that are supposed to be fun.

Historia
Back when restaurant menus were still printed on paper, and wearing a mask—or not—was a decision made mostly on Halloween, David Sedaris spent his time doing normal things. As Happy-Go-Lucky opens, he is learning to shoot guns with his sister, visiting muddy flea markets in Serbia, buying gummy worms to feed to ants, and telling his nonagenarian father wheelchair jokes. But then the pandemic hits, and like so many others, he’s stuck in lockdown, unable to tour and read for audiences, the part of his work he loves most.

This book kind of destroyed me. It can be confusing at times, by design, but go with it, like letting a tide sweep you away. It’s beautifully constructed, beautifully written, and beautifully read. I envy you for getting to listen to it for your first time. Enjoy!

Not without fault.
Revisado: 02-26-22
This book has many lovely qualities, but I would not recommend it to anyone who wants to use its story as a way to better understand the Trojan War. Part of what makes Greek Mythology so attractive is that it leaves no one without fault. Every character and god has both good and bad faults. In this book, the author seeks to make Helen and Paris completely innocent and without flaw. In order to do so, the author picks and chooses pieces of their story, omits full narratives, and depicts everyone else as the enemy. For example, to remove all of Helen’s flows, Menelaus must start off with a mild-tempered and uninspiring character, then become hostile and evil, only to return to return to being meek and quiet. Unfortunately, the authors attempt to focus on Helen and Paris’ love and make them the victims of others actions, she creates two characters who are supremely annoying. The reader ends up (or at least I did) reviling Helen and Paris and almost wishing for their demise, which is unfair because while Helen and Paris are not the innocent victims depicted in this story, they are also not without redeeming qualities and the war is as unfair to them, in many respects, as any other character. Again, this book is not without worth, but I would not recommend it.

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway - a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors.
