Great story, adult actors are great, but awkward editing and shrill children

I would have enjoyed the story much more with a single actor reading it. The awkward transitions and volume discrepancies were frustrating, especially with child actors' piercing voices and often one-note delivery.

I picked this up while doing some Arthurian research, and thought this was going to be a slog of antiquated language and flowery poetry. Not so: the performance was engaging and the language fairly accessible, and it felt like listening to stories more than poems. Very well done.

just a delightful read. Serkis gives a wide range of fantastic performances, and tells the story in such a way that even the dryer passages are engaging.

Don't expect modern fairy tales

Be advised: These are the first edition stories, ie folklore collected from the German peasantry, long before the Brothers edited them into viable childrens literature. They are weird, have bizarre non-logic, and several have no endings. Delightful for someone who loves the history of storytelling, but not for modern children who will be quite confused. But for folklore purists, Zipes has done a fantastic job.

For performance, one reader was very flat, and both were very slow, so I had to listen at 1.20 speed to not zone out.

Loved the story, loved the world, and loved the narration. One of the books that justified my audible subscription.

Great world, but characters have no agency in it

Performance: the reader took a few chapters to settle into the rhythm of the prose, but ultimately told the story well. Very slow, so listen at 1.25 speed.

Story: The opening chapters were a delightful welcome into the world, with fascinating fantasy world-building, magic, and interesting characters.

Then, unfortunately, we meet our protagonists. The Vestrids have put themselves at the mercy of an incompetent husband, and with them most of their character agency. While there are exciting moments, and the descriptions and dialogue are great, this book feels like backstory to a more interesting saga yet to come; 30+ hours of setup.

The fiction is great, and the stories read by actors really sing.

BUT, two gripes: the last entry is a long non-fiction piece about baseball, and the voice acting is a very mixed bag.

Missing three stories present in the Kindle Edition (which appears to be the same translation, so I don't know why they're not included):

- The Fairy
- The Ridiculous Wishes
- Donkey Skin

Further, it also omits Perrault's morals at the end of each story. This might be for the better if you're playing the stories for children; Perrault's moral of Bluebeard was "obey your husband" (even if he's a murderer). Still, if I'm listening to the original 1600s Fairy Tales, I'm doing so because I want to know the actual original stories, not a sanitized version.

The narrator has a thick accent (possibly German? He sounds like Henning Wehn). It's a bit distracting, but he tells the stories well.

Cool, story, well told, but the narrator and voice cast really brought it to life. Would recommend.

Well told, and I am SO grateful for how well researched the pronunciations are! I cringe at audiobooks that can't handle Irish words, or obscure names. Kudos, team!
