Historia
Carson McCullers was all of 23 when she published her first novel, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. She became an overnight literary sensation, and soon such authors as Tennessee Williams were calling her "the greatest prose writer that the South [has] produced." The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter tells an unforgettable tale of moral isolation in a small southern mill town in the 1930s.

The performance made it all worth while.

I never read this book when I was in school, so I knew nothing about it. If I were actually reading a physical copy, I am not sure that I would have finished it. For me, the narrator was phenomenal and truly brought the characters to life.

Historia
As the witches roast chestnuts and melt lead to see their fate, a series of odd messengers land on their doorstep bearing invitations for a New Year's Eve masquerade hosted by a woman they've never met. Gossip, dreams and portents follow, leading the witches to question the woman's motives. Is she as benevolent as she seems or is she laying a trap? And so, as Gilded-Age New York prepares to ring in the new year, the witches don their finery and head for the ball, on the hunt for answers that might well be the end of them.

Half Finished Was the Story
Revisado: 12-27-19
Overall, this was a nice little follow up to The Witches of New York, which I loved. The story just felt too rushed, so much so that it should have been panned out to make another full book. It was great to hear more of the three witches, though.

Historia
In this intimate, haunting, literary memoir read by the author, an American icon tells her story for the first time, in her own gorgeous words - about a challenging and lonely childhood, the craft that helped her find her voice, and a powerful emotional legacy that shaped her journey as a daughter and a mother.

Size of pieces will vary
Revisado: 07-16-19
Sally Field is someone I have always admired, so I was definitely anxious to listen to her memoir. I wanted to love this book, and I did to an extent, up until the last chapter or so. Most of the book describes her life from the early 60’s to the late 70’s. After that, things are just briefly mentioned. After going into such rich detail about her lovers, her first husband, her children, it was almost startling that she would just skim over nearly 40 years of her life, including another marriage, another child, and arguably many of her most iconic roles. Great telling of an interesting life, if only just pieces of an interesting life.

Historia
In a strange world where Rose McGowan was continually on display, stardom soon became a personal nightmare of constant exposure and sexualization. Rose escaped into the world of her mind, something she had done as a child, and into high-profile relationships. Every detail of her personal life became public, and the realities of an inherently sexist industry emerged with every script, role, public appearance, and magazine cover. The Hollywood machine packaged her as a sexualized bombshell, hijacking her image and identity and marketing them.

Lost In Translation
Revisado: 01-18-19
I wanted to like this book. I went in with the mindset that Rose is a badass who has fought her way through hell. She is, there’s no doubt. Where she lost me was her chapters long ramblings that felt as though she was calling the reader (or listener) an idiot over and over and assuming that we are the punchline of Hollywood jokes. Sure, she has had insight that most of us never will, but acting as though fame was this horrible thing that happened to her seems a little odd, since she never seemed to want to truly leave the Hollywood lifestyle. It was painful to hear some of the horrible things that happened to her, but towards the end the “I was helpless and left my body” line started to feel like an excuse used in hindsight. I hate saying that, I honestly do. I am a proud feminist and supporter of the #MeToo movement, but this book turned into a rant that went off the rails more than a few times. Rose is Brave, but could maybe use a little guidance to better express her thoughts.
