Historia
Clara Lawson is torn from her life in an instant. Without warning, her home is invaded by armed men, and she finds herself separated from her beloved husband and daughters. The last thing her husband yells to her is to say nothing. In chapters that alternate between past and present, the novel slowly unpeels the layers of Clara's fractured life. We see her growing up, raised with her sisters by the stern Mama and Papa G, becoming a poised and educated young woman, falling desperately in love with the forbidden son of her adoptive parents.

Historia
Serving as a powerful follow-up to Jordan Peterson’s book 12 Rules for Life, Dr. Gad Saad unpacks what is really happening in progressive safe zones, why we need to be paying more attention to these trends, and what we must do to stop the spread of dangerous thinking. A professor at Concordia University who has witnessed this troubling epidemic firsthand, Dr. Saad dissects a multitude of these concerning forces (corrupt thought patterns, belief systems, attitudes, etc.) that have given rise to a stifling political correctness in our society.

A gentle engaging listen, with the Norton narration probably the best way to enjoy this novel.

From one of Britain's most celebrated writers of color, Girl, Woman, Other is a magnificent portrayal of the intersections of identity and a moving and hopeful story of an interconnected group of black British women. Winner of the 2019 Booker Prize and short-listed for the Gordon Burn Prize, Girl, Woman, Other paints a vivid portrait of the state of post-Brexit Britain, as well as looking back to the legacy of Britain's colonial history in Africa and the Caribbean.

Won the Booker!
Revisado: 06-04-20
Ok so why am I questioning yet another less than mediocre book winning a major prize- no idea. Had to read it for book club otherwise would have given up on it a lot earlier. Narrator truly awful, maybe a better narrator would have kept me listening longer - but maybe not

Mantel as a wordsmith is a given but Simon slater’s narration is the icing on the cake. He effortlessly and seamlessly brings the protagonists to life leaving this listener in I doubt that this is why she loves audiobooks.

Historia
Little Lien wasn't taken from her Jewish parents - she was given away in the hope that she might be saved. Hidden and raised by a foster family in Amsterdam during the Nazi occupation, she survived the war only to find that her real parents had not. Much later, she fell out with her foster family, and Bart van Es - the grandson of Lien's foster parents - knew he needed to find out why. His account of tracing Lien and telling her story is a searing exploration of two lives and two families.

Remarkable story
Revisado: 04-16-19
Rarely do I finish a book and think my time has been so well spent. Beautifully written and narrated by the author, this is such a compelling story. This is all the more remarkable as this genre is possible overpopulated.

The narrator .....
Revisado: 03-18-19
Story was a bit too full of angst and toilet behind bushes being interrupted by dogs for my liking BUT it was the narrator who sounded as if she herself was struggling with the call of nature behind a bush which spoiled it for me. I think my review would be kinder if I had read it!

Historia
Wentworth is today a crumbling and forgotten palace in Yorkshire. Yet just 100 years ago it was the ancestral pile of the Fitzwilliams' - an aristocratic clan whose home and life were fuelled by coal mining. This is the story of their spectacular decline: of inheritance fights; rumours of a changeling and of lunacy; philandering earls; illicit love; war heroism: a tragic connection to the Kennedys'; violent deaths: mining poverty and squalor; and a class war that literally ripped apart the local landscape.

Outstanding!
Revisado: 12-07-18
Wow! Life had to take a back seat while I finished this truly fascinating book. It’s a cliche to say real life is stranger than fiction but it’s true for the landed gentry of Wentworth. Rarely have I been transported into the narrative of factual book by the narrator but I will seek out everything gather Armstrong has done for audible - remarkable!!

The Aussie accent!
Revisado: 07-23-18
Enjoyed the story line and the characters and fair to say that if I had read it I would have rated it a 4 but when the author said at the end that the narrator had been coached in an Australian accent I choked on my coffee! Not sure which nationality did the coaching - an Italian maybe?
