This definitely did not live up to DaVinci code or Angels and Demons. The story was a bit slow and dull and didn’t just pull you in like his previous books. The ending twist about the villain didn’t have the lasting psychological impact on the main characters it should have. They ended up moving on to soon with other events after the twist and the main characters didn’t seem affected by it as they should have in the final chapters.

The Great Gatsby is still a classic! The way the F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the English language is brilliant. The way he describes everything, from the atmosphere of the 20's, to the description of West Egg, and how Gatsby created his persona to win Daisy's love is mesmerizing.

Jake Gyllenhaal was a little wooden in parts of his performance and I expected him to create more characters using his voice than he actually did. I especially wanted him to voice Nick Carraway differently, and at times I found myself wishing it was Tobey Maguire and picturing how he would narrate the story. Still, a very good listen.

A step below A Time To Kill

It had been many years since I read A Time To Kill and I was excited to read another story with Jake Brigance. This was a very good story, but did not stack up to the grittiness and emotion of A Time to Kill. Instead this was more subtle, much more like The Chamber with more details about the town and secondary characters and not as much into the development of Jake Brigance as there was in A Time To Kill.

It took me a few chapters to get into the narration style of Michael Beck. I did not always like the way he read some characters and found his use of a southern accent to be obviously phony and that of someone who had never lived in the south.

The story was interesting, but as it developed I could begin to anticipate how it would end, and wished there was more of a surprise to how it ended. By the time the story reached the verdict you had already guessed how it would end and why it would end that way.
