In March 1836, the Mexican army led by General Santa Anna massacred more than 200 Texians who had been trapped in the Alamo. After 13 days of fighting, American legends Jim Bowie and Davey Crockett died there, along with other Americans who had moved to Texas looking for a fresh start. It was a crushing blow to Texas' fight for freedom. But the story doesn’t end there. The defeat galvanized the Texian settlers, and under General Sam Houston’s leadership, they rallied. Six weeks after the Alamo, Houston and his band of settlers defeated Santa Anna’s army in a shocking victory.

An entertaining Christmas story from the 19th century! The listener may guess who the "random" children are early on, but the ending is still not totally predictable. I felt the precocious young heroine's siblings were sadly overlooked, and the dear thing seemed a bit of a selfish brat at times, but this too didn't spoil the story.

Rather "inside baseball" with the main theme being how it is hard to make money with a new Christmas song, but like winning the lottery if you can write one. The tone is basically anti-Christmas and pro materialism. The bit at the end about how Christmas songs should bring us all together and make us forget the political issues that divide us -- followed not 1 minute later with how someone should write a Christmas song about 'the children separated from their families at the border' was a bit ironic, but no doubt very unintentionally so.

This is not really an audio book, it is more like an audio documentary. It consists mostly of interviews with investigators and victims, or relatives of victims. This makes it quite compelling, but also makes the information provided rather incomplete as everything is skewed towards those willing to be speak publicly.

By the end of the trials, beyond the 20 who were executed and the five who perished in prison, 207 individuals had been accused, 74 had been "afflicted", 32 had officially accused their fellow neighbors, and 255 ordinary people had been inexorably drawn into that ruinous and murderous vortex, and this doesn't include the religious, judicial, and governmental leaders.

Very factual & interesting, without a lot of political propaganda, (mild siding with American Indians over Whites in the war and needless mentioning that she is opposed to slavery -- of course! No need to emphasize that!) but marred by the Alexa-like reader. More feeling and a variety in tone is needed. She also reads V E R Y S L O W L Y. I dealt with this by increasing the playback speed.
