Great story, but the narrator........
Revisado: 07-01-19
First the audible book - I read the first of these books and really enjoyed it so I decided to try the Audible version for the second book in the series. I will go back to reading for the rest. The narrator was very hard to listen to. The character voices are shrill and the tone of the conversations does not match the speech pattern of the narrator. Normally I am not picky and have never written a review before, but this was awful and is the reason for the overall 3 star rating.
Now - to something I am curious about. When I went to audible to purchase this book, it shows the book as not available through Audible, but when I searched the book on Amazon, it let me purchase the book through Audible - very strange!

Should have bought the abridged version
Revisado: 08-28-18
I rarely buy the abridged version of an Audible book, but I wish I had here. The book just seemed to drag and I did not look forward to resuming listening when I got in my car or went to the gym. I liked the premise of the story and like Scott Brick as a narrator, but I think this book might be better read than listened too.

Too many characters
Revisado: 02-15-18
I could not finish this audible book. It felt like there were two or three books going on at one time. I would get interested in one story and the author would switch to another. The story is told through the thoughts of the various characters which made the action difficult to follow.
The book maybe better in a written format where the reader could flip back a few pages to straighten out the plot. The narrator reads fast and whispers a lot - makes the story even harder to follow.

Historia
The Summons: Once Judge Atlee was a powerful figure in Clanton, Mississippi. Now the judge is a sick, lonely old man who has withdrawn to his sprawling ancestral home. Knowing the end is near, Judge Atlee has issued a summons for his two sons to return to Clanton to discuss his estate. The Brethren: They call themselves the Brethren: three disgraced former judges doing time in a Florida federal prison. In prison these judges-turned-felons can reminisce about old court cases, dispense a little jailhouse justice, and contemplate where their lives went wrong. Or they can use their time in prison to get very rich, very fast.

Good stories and I enjoyed them
Revisado: 05-08-13
I always enjoy listening to books by John Grisham. The Summons was fine, but there were technical issues with The Brethern. Multiple times during the reading a sentence or two were repeated - like a stuck record. Most times the sentence was only repeated once, but on 2 occasions it was repeated twice. This broke the flow of the recording. That being said, I liked the narrator for The Brethern better than the narrator for The Summons.
Receiving 2 books together was a good value, but I wish the download had been devided by book so I could choose which I wanted to listen to first.

All good things, even laughter and orange marmalade cake, must come to an end. And in Light from Heaven, the long-anticipated final volume in the phenomenally successful Mitford Years series, Karon deftly ties up all the loose ends of Father Timothy Kavanagh's deeply affecting life.

Great Series
Revisado: 12-05-12
I have really enjoyed getting to know the characters of Mitford. I am sad to see the series end. The only thing I would change, is that I would have liked a scene with all 5 Barlow children together.

Historia
Since he was a boy growing up in Mississippi, Father Tim has lived what he calls "the life of the mind". Except for cooking and gardening and washing his dog, he never learned to savor the work of his hands. And then he finds a derelict nativity scene: twenty figures, including a flock of sheep, that have suffered the indignities of time and neglect.

Loved the series
Revisado: 12-05-12
If you could sum up Shepherds Abiding in three words, what would they be?
I have listened to the entire Mitford series and loved each book.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Father Tim is great. A good man with human failings.
What about John McDonough’s performance did you like?
He is the voice of the Mitford series for me. I am not sure I could listen to the books with another narrator.

Really enjoyed this story.
Revisado: 06-25-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. I really enjoy Ellis Peters' books. This is one of the first I listened to as an audiobook. It took a little while to catch on to all of the characters but was very good when I did.
