True to the series.

This is not a Hollywood ending. It's somewhat gritty, a little sad, and alot screwed up. It's perfect.

Weakest work in the series.
Revisado: 07-15-20
The book feels forced, rushed, and cobbled together with a deus ex machina ending in place of the detective dresden debriefing and reflection that the other novels have executed well. An argument could be made that this is a part 1 installment, but the book is short and plot points feels undeveloped compared to previous installments. There is also more repitition of description in this novel. Dresden spends more time comparing himself to marvel comic super heros than he does devoting any cognitive effort toward solving the problems he is presented with. Combat exchanges in this novel are superficial and devoid of dresden's trademark cleverness. This book has an abundance of what I assume is fan service, and I'm disappointed in the final product.

Thirteen hundred gates have opened to solar systems around the galaxy. But as humanity builds its interstellar empire in the alien ruins, the mysteries and threats grow deeper. In the dead systems where gates lead to stranger things than alien planets, Elvi Okoye begins a desperate search to discover the nature of a genocide that happened before the first human beings existed and to find weapons to fight a war against forces at the edge of the imaginable. But the price of that knowledge may be higher than she can pay.

Nothing happens in this book.

First 6 hours are a retelling of events presented in the previous installment. The remaining time could have been replaced with a few sentences from the wiki. Overall this volume feels very "phoned in" and I struggled to remain interested in story. Fortunately, in all the times my mind wandered and I needed to go back and relisten I never actually missed anything.

Historia
The Skull Throne of Krasia stands empty. Built from the skulls of fallen generals and demon princes, it is a seat of honor and ancient, powerful magic, keeping the demon corelings at bay. From atop the throne, Ahmann Jardir was meant to conquer the known world, forging its isolated peoples into a unified army to rise up and end the demon war once and for all. But Arlen Bales, the Warded Man, stood against this course, challenging Jardir to a duel he could not in honor refuse.

Sex, Sex, Violence. See how that phrase doesn't include the word plot? That is because in this book the plot is an excuse to write in more sex and violence.

A step back...
Revisado: 04-11-15
Character developments in this installment were almost irrationally inconsistent with how the same characters are developed in earlier installments of this series. So much of what happens in this novel lacks the authors traditionally well explored character motivations. I realize this is half of a book, but I think if someone had given me a 5 minute synopses of "lots of people do things and then the surprise lizards eat everyone", I could have skipped DOD and gone right to TCG.

I would not recommend this book to a young adult, but everyone else is getting a copy for Christmas. PS I did not like the hunger games and do not think comparisons to other popular fiction are good predictors of whether or not you will like this series.

All my horses have been beaten to death...
Revisado: 03-03-15
Daytime television assumes that I don't have the long term memory skills to make it a week without a reminder, so they provide me a recap at the beginning of each new episode. M. Hogan assumes that I need the salient plot points force fed to me EVERY THIRD PARAGRAPH. I don't mind relistening to a passage if I missed something. I do mind hearing the same blunt statement in the same words every 5 minutes. As I listen to this book, I picture the main character looking at a post it note every few steps and thinking "Oh that's right, I really need to find a way to help Miranda!"
