Historia
Commissar Ciaphas Cain and the Valhallan 597th are in the thick of it again, putting down an uprising of Chaos cultists on an Imperial mining world. Though their mission is a success, they find evidence that the corruption might have spread to other planets and that the forge world of Ironfound could now be at risk. The munitions Ironfound produces are vital to the Imperial war effort in the subsector; its safety must be assured at all costs. As battle explodes across the planet, Ciaphas Cain and his regiment come up against allies and enemies old and new in their fight for victory.

Voice actors great! Can't wait for next one
Revisado: 06-13-23
Ciaphus Cain has to be my favorite Warhammer character now. It is the first series of Warhammer books I have on Audible rather than print and have really enjoyed them,
Steven Perring is THE voice for Cain now and his performance couldn't be better, making the dialogue for each of the characters distinctive and matching their personalities. Penelope Rawlins' voicing of Inquisitor Vail has has deepened since the first Audible book - with emotional inflections and a clear understanding of the relationship between Cain and Vail. Emma Gregory must have a blast with Sulla. This is good stuff.

As the Tyrannic Wars sweep across the face of the Eastern Fringe, Cain and Jurgen find themselves on the jungle moon of a gas giant, fighting off a splinter fleet. The world is uninhabited, but must be protected to prevent the tyranid advance threatening several nearby systems. The situation goes from bad to worse when Cain and the Catachans run into a force of insidious xenos, and the two factions are thrown into a temporary alliance purely to survive.

Just roll with new voice actors & sound effects
Revisado: 04-26-23
Classic Ciaphus Cain short story. It is an hour listen.
The voice actors were different and they used sound effects, which is a fun change of pace from the main Cain books. It had the feel of a pulp fiction radio show. I enjoyed it thoroughly, as well as the other short Cain story Dead in the Water.

Pleased with depth
Revisado: 10-03-22
Most accounts of Hannibal's life and invasion are from the Roman point of view and lack much of the interesting detail and context. I listened to this book twice and came away much more informed of this era.

Historia
A National Book Award finalist for this epic work, Adrienne Mayor delivers a gripping account of Mithradates, the ruthless visionary who began to challenge Rome’s power in 120 B.C. Machiavelli praised his military genius. Kings coveted his secret elixir against poison. Poets celebrated his victories, intrigues, and panache. But until now, no one has told the full story of his incredible life.

The other side of the story
Revisado: 02-11-22
It was interesting to hear the non-Roman side of the Mithradatic wars. The history I learned dwells on the internal struggles of the mid to late Roman Republic, and from that point of view its a matter of Romans being distracted from the task of conquering the east.
The author clearly admires Mithradates, and there is a great deal of background into his childhood, character, family life and reputation. I found him odious. The politics and culture of the region were fascinating and this book is insightful.

Israel. The small strip of arid land is 5,700 miles away but remains a hot-button issue and a thorny topic of debate. But while everyone seems to have a strong opinion about Israel, how many people actually know the facts? Here to fill in the information gap is Israeli American Noa Tishby.

It is good to find common agreement
Revisado: 02-11-22
Noa and I are on opposite sides of the political spectrum, nevertheless I am entirely in agreement with her case for Israel. This stands to reason as the facts and conclusions are incontrovertible.
Digressions into cultural and personal anecdotes were interesting, and not only gives insight but also humanizes the author. Which I suppose was the point, but it also made the book more interesting.
Recommended.

Historia
In the summer of 1776, fifty-six men risked their lives and livelihood to defy King George III and sign the Declaration of Independence - yet how many of them do we actually remember? Signing Their Lives Away introduces listeners to the eclectic group of statesmen, soldiers, slaveholders, and scoundrels who signed this historic document - and the many strange fates that awaited them. Some prospered and rose to the highest levels of United States government, while others had their homes and farms seized by British soldiers.

Engaging. Liked the format
Revisado: 06-18-21
Each section was about one of the Founders as a sort of stand alone bio. That helped in understanding the relationships between the Founders as each viewed the others. There were so many that I knew nothing about. I'd recommend this for students, as history is driven by people.

Historia
Although previously undervalued for their strategic impact because they represented only a small percentage of total forces, the Union and Confederate navies were crucial to the outcome of the Civil War. In War on the Waters, James M. McPherson has crafted an enlightening, at times harrowing, and ultimately thrilling account of the war’s naval campaigns and their military leaders. McPherson recounts how the Union navy’s blockade of the Confederate coast, leaky as a sieve in the war’s early months, became increasingly effective as it choked off vital imports and exports.

Historia
From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. The Pentagon has officially confirmed more than 150 of Kyles kills (the previous American record was 109), but it has declined to verify the astonishing total number for this book. Iraqi insurgents feared Kyle so much they named him al-Shaitan ("the devil") and placed a bounty on his head.
