Superb book and superb narration!
Revisado: 11-01-23
I am a voracious reader of non-fiction books about the Tudors, so when I learned husband and wife historians John Guy and Julia Fox teamed up to co-author this book chronicling the life of Anne Boleyn, I immediately placed a pre-order for the audio book. And wowza, and I am so glad I did. Even though the book was 17 hours long, I devoured it within five days.
Bowing down to whomever made the decision to have Stephanie Racine narrate this book! Racine’s narration was pitch perfect, as was her French pronunciation.
There is no need to shield anyone from plot spoilers, since it’s common knowledge that Anne was Henry VIII’s second wife and he had her executed a mere three years after they married on trumped up charges. But Hunting the Falcon is so much more than just a rehash of the known details of Anne and Henry’s relationship.
The authors’ exhaustive research revealed information with fresh insight, including Anne’s formative early years when she lived in Europe, long before she ever met Henry. Loads of details about the Boleyn family, along with the European politics in the 16th century too.
Hunting the Falcon was impressively researched and despite being a work of scholarship, it read like a historical fiction book. As someone who had read countless books on Anne Boleyn, I would say Hunting the Falcon is the very best I’ve encountered.
Would highly recommend for anyone interested in the subject. Superb book and superb narration!

Historia
April Clarke-Cliveden was the first person Hannah Jones met at Oxford. Vivacious, bright, occasionally vicious, and the ultimate It girl, she quickly pulled Hannah into her dazzling orbit. Together, they developed a group of devoted and inseparable friends—Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily—during their first term. By the end of the year, April was dead.

Meh
Revisado: 09-04-22
Having read all of Ruth Ware's books, I would have to say The It Girl was just meh.
While Imogen Church's narration was superb, the story just seemed to drag and drag and drag. Thirty minutes of a detailed description of a strip poker game, yet the reveal of the killer seemed rushed and frankly not plausible. I also agree with other reviewers that the main character was a simpering fool.

Revisado: 09-04-22
I've read every book of Mhairi McFarlane's and have loved them all. Of all of her books, Mad About You has been my favorite.
McFarlane's writing isn't just typical Rom-Com...her character development and witty style sets her apart from other writers in this genre. I am always sad when I reach the last page of her books since I never want them to end.

Historia
His name was Feliks. He came to London to commit a murder that would change history. A master manipulator, he had many weapons at his command, but against him were ranged the whole of the English police, a brilliant and powerful lord, and the young Winston Churchill himself. These odds would have stopped any man in the world - except the man from St. Petersburg.

Narration is excellent, but story is lacking
Revisado: 01-23-22
Ken Follett is one of my favorite authors, and I have thoroughly enjoyed all of his books, except for The Man from St. Petersburg. Instead of a decent plot, the book is peppered with tedious preaching about the evils of wealth, the ruling classes and law enforcement and how violence and murder is an acceptable form of protest, i.e. "the end justifies the means.". I almost gave up on the book several times, but stuck it out through the very end hoping the story would improve. Sadly it did not improve. The only saving grace was the superb narration skills of Richard Armitage.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Erik Larson never disappoints! The Splendid and the Vile is a brilliant and engaging book that sheds light on not just Prime Minister Churchill, but his inner circle and family during terrible and heart-breaking times in WWII. The narration was pitch perfect. Absolutely superb book from start to finish.

Not as uplifting as Joyce’s other books
Revisado: 04-26-21
I’ve listened to now three of Rachel Joyce’s audio books and have throughly loved them and recommend them to others. However, I was deeply disappointed by Miss Benson’s Beetle. The narration was good, but the story was not only tedious, but unbearably sad.

Historia
The 1968 US presidential election was the young Lawrence O'Donnell's political awakening, and in the decades since it has remained one of his abiding fascinations. For years he has deployed one of America's shrewdest political minds to understanding its dynamics, not just because it is fascinating in itself but because in it is contained the essence of what makes America different and how we got to where we are now.
