Historia
When Sparrowhawk casts a spell that saves his village from destruction at the hands of the invading Kargs, Ogion, the Mage of Re Albi, encourages the boy to apprentice himself in the art of wizardry. So, at the age of 13, the boy receives his true name - Ged - and gives himself over to the gentle tutelage of the Master Ogion. But impatient with the slowness of his studies and infatuated with glory, Ged embarks for the Island of Roke, where the highest arts of wizardry are taught.

Pretty good
Revisado: 08-02-24
The story was pretty good. I’ve listened to other books by Ursula, but wasn’t super impressed by them. This one had a better flow in my opinion.
Unfortunately, Robert Ingles has a really weird cadence in this. He stops and takes a breath wherever there is a comma, even, and especially, in sentences with more than one descriptor; he sort of makes the next words their own sentence.
It’s like…. “Ged sailed on that rolling…. Dark sea.” “He looked with white…. Staring eyes”
Made certain sentences and descriptions really hard to understand and grasp… Just keep that in mind.
Pretty good.

Historia
For Conrad, moving to Overton was the promise of a fresh start, a way to escape the pain and ridicule, and leave behind the hateful words that reminded him every day he was a monster. He would not make the same mistake again. He would keep his other-self hidden, his heart shielded. Or that had been his intention. The moment his gaze met Ashley's, his resolve faltered. With a single disarming glance, she became all he could think about; an infatuation he knew must be shed. But she was human, incompatible with his kind. To love her would be to one day watch her burn.

Interesting but Take Caution!!!
Revisado: 02-07-24
This young-adult take on the preternatural world was interesting! Unfortunately, I also found Jayne’s attempt at eloquence really distracting. Maybe a little more experience and/or an expansion of her vocabulary will make the rest of the series more enjoyable.
The threats in certain scenes absolutely made my flesh crawl, which was probably the point (so good job there), but I almost didn’t finish the book because of them…
The narrator does a good job of finding her way through difficult phrases and scenes with great diction and emotion. The flow of narration was pretty good, as well. I think the different voice actors used for certain characters mean that they will return as the main character in their own perspective of a book, but I found the difference in cadence and acting a little jarring. It might make the overall experience of the series more enjoyable, though.
That’s just my opinion. Maybe it’s just not my kind of book.
