Lengthy, repetitive then gaining steam

I am glad I finished this book. It is overall worth the read/listen.

But I have to say, I almost didn't. It starts of promising but quickly loses itself in countless disjointed lengthy stories that seem to serve no particular purpose. Yes, they are related to the title, but it is more often than not missing a point the author is seemingly trying to make but hiding very well.

It often is also repetitive. Yes, what he wants to drive home is a winning mentality culture but that is clear after the first few examples and the many more he brings up really do not add much more fodder.

The good news is this book redeems itself in its last chapter. Yes, you heard/read that right. But that chapter pulls everything together in terms of tools and a lot of the previous stories actually get repeated (in very brief fashion, so you kinda need the rest of the book for context) to introduce each and every tool. Useful tools. Practical tools. Actual learnings and takeaways from this book.

So yes, this was a useful listen to me, but it took forever to get there and the story was a bit over the top. In fact I at times wonder whether all stories truly happened or just serve the storytelling purpose. The amount of luck and good timing it something else, but I chose to believe the author because I am a glass half full kinda person :)

How to be a Gold Star ANYTHING Parent

This book is fantastic. It is great from beginning until end. And it is really about more than just being a soccer parent. This book can be consumed by parents of athletes in any sports. This book can even be consumed by parents of non-athletes and you can still learn something and become a better parent.

It is simple lessons like listening to your kids and asking them about their game, their days, their anything and staying out of the response. Let them dictate the conversation. Let them think individually and critically and only chime in when they ask. Otherwise just listen.

This applies to soccer parents and parents of athletes of any sports. There are a few soccer specific sentences in this book but beyond that it is incredibly transferable to any sports really and help you make sure that your kids are not loosing the joy in THEIR sports because of you. There are many pitfalls for parents. Many I have done myself. So this book is easily eye opening and puts all these issues into great context. Listen with an open ear and an open heart. Your athlete kids will benefit from it.

But the buck doesn't stop there. Most of the lessons can easily be transferred from interactions with coaches and referees to interactions with other important touchpoints in your kids and your life, like teachers, life coaches, person of authority and many many more.

This book is worth its weight in gold and then some. One of the best listens I had on here in a while. Great content wrapped in engaging story and with entertaining narration. And at just under 4 1/2 hours not too long. If anything I was yearning for more.

Thanks a lot Dan Blank!!!

First off all, this book is currently very much up to date on some of the analytics content. Written in 2020 and having listened to it in 2021 this topic is still very much up to date in an industry that moves reasonably fast especially over the last few years.

To be clear, this is not a deep dive into how clubs do soccer analytics, but it highlights approaches and how to think about the field of analytics available to you when trying to apply it to soccer. As that I think it gives a very detailed and complete overview. From there it is up to you to take the learnings and dive into the details.

What makes this and many other books from Chest Dugger stand out is the narrative flow and built in but hidden dry soccer humor. When the author seemingly has fun with the book he is writing and when it shines through in the narration, I know I stumbled onto a good one.

Groan worthy "Management 101" somehow about soccer

This book starts out with incredibly obvious and almost comical examples how not to coach ever. I often asked myself: Does this really have to be said?

Overall the book quickly turned into what I would call a beginners class in Management. Management 101 if you will. Managing teams, players, groups, coaching, mentoring, and everything in between. Kinda with a soccer twist on it. But soccer being just a vehicle to bring those learnings across. I found most examples, especially early on, very basic and "Duh!"-worthy.

What takes further away from the credibility of this book are all the bad anecdotes. I mean if you have truly experienced all these in your soccer life you, misery just loves to follow you. And honestly, I think it is just hyperbole to somehow bridge over to the next obvious learning. To be fair, they are "fun" stories, but all together, more like fiction. Hence the 4 stars for story.

On top of that the book becomes contradictory a few times. Winning is not a thing, but achieving goals is. So when I achieve goals, is that a win then? Punishment and authority have been described and suggested in this book in all facets. Depending on where you are in the book some things are okay and later they are not. The same goes for some of the communications talk in the book. There is no clear line and guidance that I would confidently take away from this.

It gets funny when the unspoken rules come up but are actually being talked about. Not so much unspoken anymore now, are they!?

Overall I had to groan more often while listening to this book than I actually learned anything. Don't get me wrong, a lot of things are not wrong in this book, but if you had a somewhat decent upbringing or education of sorts, you likely should know most of these by heart already.

The narration is worse than most AI powered I have experienced from free products. I bet this one, as well is narrated by an AI. It must be, because this is the worst narration I have ever heard here on audible. Beginning words of the next sentence are gobbled with the previous one and odd gaps exist in lots of places. Headings are somehow eaten up into the next sentence without any emphasis or tonality changes. It straight up impossible to listen. I am returning this book. I was contemplating getting the actual book behind it on amazon (to see whether the actual content is better), but with 0 reviews I am not dropping $9.99 on it.

With that being said, strangely there were 100 perfect reviews on this book on this site here before mine. Some reviews are almost identical in words. If that isn't a batch of bought/farmed reviews then I don't know.

A little long in the tooth sometimes and very focussed on leadership and management roles. I wish this book had more on individuals and their first 90 days, but I should have expected this. Also, I am sure this book could have gotten away with less pages/timem and get to the point a little more often. Still a bunch of good information, just not great and admittedly I am biased because not entirely what I wanted out of this book. But that may very well just be on me.

it feels like they had trouble squeezing this one into under an hour. it's crisp and to the point but often I was left with open question or lacking deep enough examples.
