Compelling, Action Love Story
Revisado: 11-21-24
While a long book, the plot was easy to follow and the main characters were compelling. It was easy to root for Scotch and Toni. I have to admit the first few chapters were slow and boring. But then as our former history professor gets sent to a conference in France the action heats up and there are countless close calls. I enjoyed the listen. Be prepared that this story takes place in the 1980s so the dialogue and tech is a little dated. But it’s a worthwhile listen.

Historia
The quaint coastal town of Port St. Joe, FL isn’t the kind of place where people go around getting stabbed to death. So, when Jake Bellamy—an insurance agent and beloved father—is found murdered in the dewy grass of a local park, it comes as a bit of a shock. Now it’s up to Evan Caldwell, the new sheriff and recent transplant, to solve the case. All he wants to do is live peacefully on his boat and tend to his comatose wife, but that’s easier said than done when he’s tasked with solving the murder of a man with no enemies.

Series gets even better
Revisado: 10-19-24
I haven’t had so much fun listening to a book, well, since the first book. The storyline kept me guessing and the characters in the police department are so real I felt like I knew them. Nick Sullivan did a tremendous job narrating. He made the characters come to life. I really recommend this series.

Historia
A gutsy dame, a surly smuggler, a deep and sinister river. It's February of 1928 - late summer in the Amazon. Prudence McMarion, a film editor at Walter Disney's animation studio in Los Angeles, has taken a leave of absence to travel deep into the Amazon Rainforest with her best friend, Brazilian native Eleanor Martins, to make an independent movie in Eleanor's home village. Along the way, they meet members of the seedy, disreputable "expat community" there. None are to be trusted.

Surprised me
Revisado: 09-02-24
If you like an Indiana Jones type adventure this book delivers. The narrator grated on my nerves but I can’t deny he put his heart and soul into his performance. You also need to be comfortable with 1920’s dialogue and way of life. I could probably think of a dozen reasons I shouldn’t have liked this book but I always looked forward to listening to it.

Intense story
Revisado: 04-11-24
Having adopted two children from Central America myself, this story had me reliving some of the fears we felt. My wife even had a gun pointed at her by a thief while we were in country. This story weaves the violence and corruption of these poor countries into an intense tale of kidnapping and extortion. It works on some of parents worst fears and their instincts to protect their new family. I thoroughly enjoyed the performance as well.

Engaging clean story
Revisado: 01-06-24
One of those few books where I was surprised how good it was and satisfied by how it all wrapped up. Themes covered include wrongful conviction, veteran mental health, autism, assault, crime investigations, and suspense. The main characters are two college kids and a veteran. There are a few twists in the story.

Engaging life story and all the intertwined people and places that would certainly be unbelievable if it weren’t true. I sat in silence when it was over, thinking about my life, friends, family, loves. Lessons learned. Bravo

Eye roll…
Revisado: 01-11-23
Lots of unnecessary action just for the sake of filling pages. It’s kind of a neat premise which is the reason for three stars. Could be four stars. But besides the promising start it turns predictable and formulaic. I think my 23 year old son would,Ike it—he likes a lot of action, it’s fairly short, and he hasn’t read some of the more established authors in this genre. The performance was average as he didn’t change voices much.

Great fun
Revisado: 12-21-22
The collaboration of these talented authors works in their latest book. Unlike their first book Graceless, this time they wrote a full fledged novel which better integrated their characters. What makes this book so much better however is the awesome story about a guy searching for what happened to his dad. And really the kindness of strangers willing to help. I’ve read books from each of the authors and it was fun to “see” them work together. I look forward to their next novel.

Pros: Overall premise, performance by Sullivan
Cons: Lack of emotion when Grace went missing (the beginning) so I didn’t connect with Nathan, long winded ending
