Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

How can a collection of letters and memoirs become a nonstop page turner important book? I don’t know, but the author did it.

If there is still anyone who believes the American civil war was about state rights they need to buy this book.

Historia
Bill Bryson once again proves himself to be an incomparable companion as he guides us through the human body - how it functions, its remarkable ability to heal itself, and (unfortunately) the ways it can fail. Full of extraordinary facts (your body made a million red blood cells since you started reading this) and irresistible Bryson-esque anecdotes, The Body will lead you to a deeper understanding of the miracle that is life in general and you in particular. As Bill Bryson writes, "We pass our existence within this wobble of flesh and yet take it almost entirely for granted."

Good while it lasted.

Bill Bryson did a great reading and I enjoyed most of the book. The last few chapters appeared a little too political. I wish he would have focused more on the body and less on the medical and scientific professions and their personalities.

Historia
This is the authoritative, “deeply reported” (The Wall Street Journal) account of an eighteen-month crisis in American democracy that will be seared into the country’s political memory for decades to come. With stunning, in-the-room detail, New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns show how both our political parties confronted a series of national traumas, including the coronavirus pandemic, the January 6 attack on the Capitol, and the political brinksmanship of President Biden’s first year in the White House.

I can’t believe I ate the whole thing (I may have sleep through some). This book will be an interesting read after we’re all gone and very few people would know or care about democracy.

Historia
Originally published in 1959, Advertisements for Myself is an inventive collection of stories, essays, polemic, meditations, and interviews. It is Mailer at his brilliant, provocative, outrageous best. Emerging at the height of "hip", Advertisements is at once a chronicle of a crucial era in the formation of modern American culture and an important contribution to the great autobiographical tradition in American letters.

The narrator is the best, as is the author, my only complaint is the lack of chapter headings. Would it be too difficult for Amazon to add chapters titles instead of just numbers? Thanks Audible.

Historia
When the 160 men of Charlie Company were drafted by the US Army in May 1966, they were part of the wave of conscription that would swell the American military to eighty thousand combat troops in Vietnam by the height of the war in 1968. In the spring of 1966 the war was still popular, and the draftees of Charlie Company saw their service as a rite of passage. But by December 1967, when the company returned home, only thirty men were not casualties.

About Time
Revisado: 02-15-17
I was in the army and stationed in Korea during 1968. Even so this book was very moving. Recently I heard that Nixon sabatoged the peace efforts of Johnson by telling the North Vietnamese that if he was elected he would offer the North more favorable peace terms. Thus, the war continued for another five years. Looking at today's political scene, has anything changed?
