Lovely romance
Revisado: 03-21-23
A great mix of fun and serious. This book takes two people with lots of mental health problems and manages to tackle their struggles while also being gentle and heartwarming. Kat, especially, is wonderful. She's got social anxiety and is often grumpy. She reads as autistic to me, and I found a lot of her struggles super relatable and spot-on in the portrayal. Even though Kat and Silas start out disliking each other and kind of stumble into their fake-dating relationship, as soon as they start to get to know each other it becomes clear that they're a good match. They challenge each other, prop each other up in difficult times, and are super understanding and patient when it comes to trauma and healing. Silas's relationship to his friends is also wonderful. I love to see depictions of healthy male friendships, and it sets up future books in the series nicely.
4.5 stars - half knocked off for early comments from Silas calling Kat "android"/implying lack of humanity
I read the audiobook, and the narrators were competent and easy to listen to.

Historia
What if the pond in the park was a gateway to another world? What if there really were faeries in the rose garden? Within this book are contained: a dryad mistaken for a gardener, a bit of good old-fashioned frog kissing, gnomes in love, a heroic faerie prince, hot chocolate, and an elk named Bianca. Four original fairytales, a short novella, and more—inspired by the author’s love of fairytales.

Good followup to book one
Revisado: 03-15-22
Book two wasn't as gory as book 1, but still had the dark, creepy vibes. I suggest you read in order, as a lot of time is devoted to Fiona's developing relationships with the other characters and her struggles to move on from the events of book 1. I did question Fiona's decision-making at times. (Though not nearly as much as Croft did, LOL.) I liked seeing more of Croft, meeting his sister, and getting just a hint of his past. I hope more of that will be coming in later books. Aside from Fiona's potential romantic entanglements, this book really revolves around the relationships between women, some of which are helpful and good, and some of which are toxic. The ladies of The Orchard are complex, flawed, and whole, whether on the side of good or evil.
I like the male narrator's voices/accents, though they sometimes did veer into over-the-top. The female narrator didn't work as well for me, seeming to slip into modern American too often. The sound mixing was my biggest issue, though, because the male voice was almost always much quieter than the female voice, making the listening experience awkward.

Historia
Dying is the only thing people do with any regularity, and Fiona makes her indecorous living cleaning up after the corpses are carted away. Her childhood best friend, Mary, was the last known victim of Jack the Ripper. It's been two years since Fiona scrubbed Mary's blood from the floorboards, and London is no longer buzzing about the Ripper, but Fiona hasn't forgotten. When she's called to a murder in the middle of the night, Fiona finds a victim mutilated in an eerily similar fashion to those of the Ripper, and only a few doors down from Mary's old home.

Dark and atmospheric Victorian mystery
Revisado: 03-13-22
A dark, atmospheric Victorian murder mystery. Fiona is a great heroine, and Byrne brings her gritty world alive with her writing. The cast of interesting side characters/potential love interests for Fiona contribute to both the worldbuilding and the mystery. I really loved The Hammer in particular, as well as grumpy Grayson Croft. I did feel that there was a bit of fetishization with the repeated use of the word "exotic" that I hope will not continue into future books. The mystery itself was creepy and well-paced, but I did guess the murderer right from the beginning. Fiona and her interactions with the other characters are definitely the most gripping part of the book, and the part that left me eager for book two.

This was a fun little paranormal historical Christmas romance. Sweet and sexy with a bit of ghostly mystery. The dual narration was stellar and made for a highly enjoyable short listen.

Fantastic Production
Revisado: 08-13-20
This is a fabulous audiobook production, and made for really fun listening with the whole family. The voice acting is superb, with excellent mimicking of the actors from the original Star Wars movies, as well as unique voices for the additional characters. The women's voices are the only slight weak spot. A whole host of Star Wars sound effects adds cinematic atmosphere and gives the audiobook a radio-play feel.

They say Paris is always a good idea.... You know what I say? Paris would be a much better idea if I spoke the dang language. I can't even board the metro to visit the Louvre without ending up at the Moulin Rouge, and let's not even mention how I'll ever make it through a day at my new office. Fortunately my company hooks me up with my own personal translator. Ooh la la. Or should I say bloody hell? Because he's charming, witty, and British, and he brings the city to life for me.
