Grim start , gets better
Revisado: 03-26-25
I almost stopped listening to this book, 1/3 of the way through because it was unrelentingly grim. Painful to listen to. It did improve as it went on. Lots of twists, some of them more plausible than others, but held my interest until the end.

Billy Williams became a media sensation during the war, telling reporters that the elephants did more for him than he was ever able to do for them, but his story has since been forgotten.

Wish there were more people like Elephant Bill around
Revisado: 02-15-25
A wonderful true story of a man who grew up in Cornwall, England, who came to the jungles of (then) Burma, inspired by his love of animals and wish for adventure. His search for understanding of the huge animals who labored in the teak forest, inspired his love and respect for both the elephants and for the people that worked for him and in the surrounding areas. But the true heroes of this story are the elephants. We could learn so much from them. Beautifully narrated.

Noir with a hint of the supernatural
Revisado: 06-28-23
Once again Russell manages to adroitly walk the line between realism and the suggestion of the supernatural, no small accomplishment. Really enjoyed this book even if the hard-bitten female detective character seemed a bit implausible for the period. Lots of interesting detail about the birth of the Hollywood film industry. Thumbs up.

Historia
At the age of 19, Lara Prior-Palmer discovered a website devoted to "the world's longest, toughest horse race" - an annual competition of endurance and skill that involves dozens of riders racing a series of 25 wild ponies across 1,000 kilometers of Mongolian grassland. On a whim, she decided to enter the race. Riders often spend years preparing to compete in the Mongol Derby, and many fail to finish. Rough Magic captures the extraordinary story of one young woman who forged ahead, against all odds, to become the first female winner of this breathtaking race.

Couldn’t wait for it to end
Revisado: 03-16-23
As an endurance rider myself, and knowing someone who has ridden the Mongol Derby, I was interested in the author’s “adventure“. However, as one other reviewer has said, this author was so self-absorbed and immature that it was difficult to listen to. Not at all well written, could’ve used a serious editorial going over. Choppy and uneven, she bounces from subject to subject within the same paragraph. Also, by giving the result of the race in the first few pages in a transparently false sense of “modesty“ any drama as to the result is obliterated in the first a few minutes. I also was disturbed by the attitude evidenced by the author towards other riders and even the horses. As an endurance rider, our first priority is the welfare of the horse, which seems to be a very low priority for this author.

Glasgow noir
Revisado: 12-01-22
After listening to the Devil Aspect by this author and loving it, I was eager to explore some of his other work. This is not at all in the same category or of the same quality. If you’re looking for a 50 style, Detective noir whodunnit I suppose it might be to your liking, but with all the tough guy sexism that goes along with that genre, this was definitely not for me.

The facility is located in a medieval mountaintop castle surrounded by forests, on a site that is well known for concealing dark secrets going back many centuries. Dark shadows
Revisado: 11-03-22
Dark and engrossing, I found this the most fascinating book I have listened to in a while. Full of references to mythology, psychology and folklore set in a Gothic castle converted to an asylum for the criminally insane in pre-war Poland, one is left to puzzle over what underlies the darkest recesses of the human mind. The ending of the book is quite satisfying without taking away any of the mystery.

PTSD Feverdream
Revisado: 06-14-20
For those who have suffered from PTSD, be forewarned that the first half of this book may trigger some very difficult associations. The accuracy of the authors depiction of the maelstrom of addiction, psychiatric symptoms and suicidal impulses that often characterize PTSD, leads me to believe that he has, as have I, cared for someone who has suffered from it. These sections were pretty painful for me to read. The second half of the book is pretty boilerplate in my opinion. Typical thriller with implausible twists and turns and the ending was not very satisfying. Still, kept me listening. Just be careful about the PTSD part.

Crime in the time of quarantine
Revisado: 06-10-20
I normally am not a short story fan, but I found this collection delightful. Comically twisted, each story offers a different take on life under quarantine-from technologically challenged small-time criminals trying to figure out how to use zoom to the chance observations of a young woman finally taking up that hobby she’d always intended to get to. Thank you Audible!

Seriously???
Revisado: 04-15-20
Suffice it to say that when the “natural“ explanations for events seem less plausible than the supernatural, you have a poorly constructed mystery.
