Great but frustrating story

I enjoyed the story, but there were parts I had to clench my fist through, and parts that were unsatisfying with their lack of resolution in the novel. Of course I realize that such is life, sometimes a happy ending is dodging a sad ending as long as you can.

This story and narrator had me engaged from page 1. I listened to just the sample and had to buy it just to keep listening immediately (normally I just browse through and add some to my wishlist). By the end I wanted to hear more, and more from this lawyers life. Once I found out that large aspects of the story were true, I was both horrified and completely unsurprised they involved Texas.

I’m a big Dennis Taylor fan, but….

Taylor is in my handful of favorite writers, and Yellowstone/super volcano post apocalyptic/sci fi/multiverse is my perfect seven(ish) layer dip. So believe me when I say I came in wanting to live this book. Outland, book 1, was actually my first of D. Tay’s books (then I consumed the Bobiverse and my world was brighter). Earth side has the structure of jumping perspectives, the same humor, and definite humanist vibes, which are my jam and the authors bread and butter, however, something was just….off. At many points I could have sworn someone else was writing. I have. I issue with cursing, but I think we found every F-bomb all his other characters across all of his books held back. Monica seems to vacillating wildly between a super zoologist and a sociopathic gun nut. A few times I felt uncomfortable listening to her parts and I’m from Texas! I kept waiting for the random, disconnected folks/storylines to become more detailed and connected to the story, but that never comes. Then the ending was seeming abrupt and came right at the point where I was finally enjoying being wit the characters and then, BAMM!!! Obvious Cliffhanger screaming wait for the next book 🤨🧐 Al that said,it’s a fun/ read, give it a shot, or Monica will give you one

I felt like the story was compressed and there was much more of it there to expand in the future. My dumb joking aside, I enjoyed the premise and found the relationship between the main character and her brother really sweet and realistic. The mom about hot in my last nerve and the patience she was able to show to her mom’s disbelief as the less plausible thing in the story.

Was this a Blippi fanfic?

I’m here for the dystopian thinly veiled Alexa hack and all. I also couldn’t help but associate Bailey with Blippi, the oddly handsome and garishly dressed childrens entertainer with a complex background. Whether intended or not, I’d definitely listen to more!

I enjoyed the story and as always loved Ray Porter’s narration. As a science nerd, I appreciated the attention to detail with everything from the lab equipment to the general scientific process. I know I’m not doing the story justice, but I don’t want to give away too much, but I’ll just say I did not expect for it to turn out to be an adorable friendship tale on top of everything else!

A great way to tell the story of one person’s legacy through many

It was at the end of the book that the beginning of the book really took on its full meaning. I read some reviews that thought Rachel’s portion was unnecessary by the time you’d heard the others, but her narration is what connects the full meaning of the title and I think story. The small actions and just being and doing good by one person can inspire others in an ongoing legacy to do and be a little better.

Having read or listened to all of the author’s other works, I had a certain feeling about where this was headed. Even so, along the way I found myself engrossed in this world, wanting to understand more of what the heck was going on. As a first book in a series, that seems like a reasonable thing to do to a reader.
As to the narrator, I greatly enjoyed Steve Campbell’s reading and performance. I’m curious to see where we find ourselves in the next book.

... unfortunately by the time this book in the series is underway, the story seems less about the aftermath of the eruption of Yellowstone and more like a "good guy with a gun" fantasy and a poorly written female character. There seemed to be a good groundwork in the first book, but characters and scenarios get jumbled and lost along the way as the good ol' boy protects himself from the consequences of left leaning thought and bad guys with guns, and very occasionally, volcanic fallout.
