Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Good narrational voice, but the characters....
Revisado: 07-07-22
The narration chosen for the main character's voice is uncomfortable to listen to. I thought maybe the whiney brat kid voice would mature along with the character (and maybe it did - a bit), but it did annoy me throughout most of the story. I'm not from the USA, so I can't really comment on accent accuracy.
The novel was alright.

Historia
In this ground-breaking investigation, Laura traces the roots of misogyny across a complex spiders web of groups extending from men's rights activists and pick-up artists to Men Going Their Own Way, trolls and the Incel movement, in the name of which some men have committed terrorist acts. Drawing parallels with other extremist movements around the world, Bates seeks to understand what attracts men to the movement, how it grooms and radicalises boys, how it operates and what can be done to stop it.

Informative - wasn't expecting to learn so much
Revisado: 01-16-22
I didn't think I was unaware of any of these issues, but I still discovered a lot of things throughout the book. Some parts were hard to listen to, but that's why we need to listen.
I've experienced a lot of the same things in this book and I kind of thought it was normal. It sounds absurd coming from someone else, though.
I say give the book a chance; the topics need awareness.
Lovely narration by the author.

Historia
Boisterous, ribald, and ultimately shattering, Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest has left an indelible mark on the literature of our time. Turning conventional notions of sanity and insanity on their heads, the novel tells the unforgettable story of a mental ward and its inhabitants, especially tyrannical Big Nurse Ratched and Randle Patrick McMurphy, the brawling, fun-loving new inmate who resolves to oppose her.

Performance and story flowed beautifully together
Revisado: 08-14-21
I enjoyed the narration style a lot. There are a lot of characters and the narrator voices them a bit differently so that it's really easy to listen to and get a good vision in your head of what's going on. The writer goes into some poetic tangents that I found interesting. I worked in a mental health hospital (also locked down) about 10 years back and it's crazy that I can still make so many comparisons to this book's story. The patients had personalities that reminded me of some of my patients, especially with their unusual tendencies and I think the author also worked in an asylum at one point which lead to a good job on accuracy from the author. Expect blatant racist terminology throughout the book but in my opinion it isn't written offensively. If anything, it sneers at people's tendancy to judge others based on preconceived biases.

Historia
In In Order to Live, Yeonmi Park shines a light not just into the darkest corners of life in North Korea, describing the deprivation and deception she endured and which millions of North Korean people continue to endure to this day, but also onto her own most painful and difficult memories. She tells with bravery and dignity for the first time the story of how she and her mother were betrayed and sold into sexual slavery in China and forced to suffer terrible psychological and physical hardship before they finally made their way to Seoul, South Korea - and to freedom.

Everyone needs to hear this story
Revisado: 08-07-21
I found Yeonmi on YouTube and decided to show more support by purchasing her book. She seems like a wonderful person and her story truly is inspiring. Her story is simultaneously unbelievable and relatable. She thinks (and writes) like a poet and it shows how well-read she is. If more people digested the harsher realities of this world, maybe those with the power to help will step up. I'm so glad I read her story and you should too! The narrator is pretty good. She doesn't always read with the best fluidity but it's only during brief moments. The story mostly flows well and I thought her accent was quite easy to understand, especially after listening for a bit. A very pleasant voice and she did a good job.

Historia
These are the stories that defy conventional logic. The proverbial vanished without a trace incidences, which happen a lot more (and a lot closer to your backyard) than almost anyone thinks. These are the missing whose situations are the hardest on loved ones left behind. The cases that are an embarrassment for park superintendents, rangers, and law enforcement charged with Search & Rescue.

narrator-storyteller disconnect
Revisado: 07-18-21
I wanted to like this book. It seemed right up my alley as far as interests and I liked that the author kept a critical but accepting viewpoint. Something about the way the author wrote his story and the way this narrator read it just doesn't connect for me. The narrator sounded flat in tone and had odd sentence spacing. Nice, smooth voice and clear pronunciation; would sound great for documentaries, but this book didn't feel like it was being told like that. It is told through the author's perspective, but by narrator voice. I also didn't quite like the chapter layouts and story jumps. I'm not trying to nitpick, I'm just explaining my rating.

Historia
Fascinated by our pervasive terror of dead bodies, mortician Caitlin Doughty set out to discover how other cultures care for their dead. In rural Indonesia, she observes a man clean and dress his grandfather's mummified body. Grandpa's mummy has lived in the family home for two years, where the family has maintained a warm and respectful relationship. She meets Bolivian natitas (cigarette-smoking, wish-granting human skulls) and introduces us to a Japanese kotsuage.

informative and interesting
Revisado: 06-16-21
Narration was clear and I liked that I could hear the author use her accent impressions to bring the stories to life. The author is respectful about culturally diverse topics and goes into great detail, letting readers learn through vivid retelling of stories and conversations. I suppose my biggest complaint is that more cultural death rituals weren't mentioned, but I know only so many can fit into one book.

Historia
Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty - a 20-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre - took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. With an original voice that combines fearless curiosity and mordant wit, Caitlin tells an unusual coming-of-age story full of bizarre encounters, gallows humor, and vivid characters (both living and very dead).

Pleasantly surprised
Revisado: 06-03-21
I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, but I quickly realized I was going to like it. With such a personal recounting of events in the author's life, I'm really happy that Caitlin narrated it herself. Raw details are rampant and very appreciated. Humour scattered throughout was a great balance to the subject matter. This book provides a very powerful message and I think every living person could benefit from reading this but if you want to read it to your dead loved-one too by all means go ahead.
