The different kind of mystery
Revisado: 10-06-24
Enjoyable story. I liked the narrator, though not some of the voices. The stooges can be horrifying, but ultimately it’s about finding friends in unexpected places and accepting people.
It’s not all funny… if Jacob’s version is true. While we got a satisfying ending, I want to know more about what Jacob and Bulldog Thelma were up to. I will be listening to book Two.

Historia
It's autumn in Ashland, Oregon, - 'tis the season for a spiced hot apple cider with a serving (or two) of Torte's famous peach cobbler. It's also the perfect time for Jules Capshaw to promote her family's beloved bake shop by competing in The Pastry Channel's reality show, Take the Cake. The prize is $25,000. But as Jules quickly learns, some people would kill for that kind of dough. Literally.

Just not much too it
Revisado: 07-08-24
I read the first book. Better than listening to it. The narrator was flat… there wasn’t much to it … just a flat monotone. There wasn’t much to the mystery and I didn’t really care about any of the characters. I like the setting of Torte and the location, but that’s about it. I doubt I’ll go further in this series, but if I do I’ll read and not listen. The end after the reveal was so cheesy that I opted to skip the last 40 minutes.

I enjoy the Lenox mysteries and looked forward to this one. It just didn’t so much for me. The narrator was good… it was the story.

Some very action oriented scenes, done well. Bit of Halloween. Good characters. Mystery was well done… with treasure involved and a bit of Norse history. Recommend.

Glad others liked it
Revisado: 08-08-23
It just wasn’t for me. It sort of creeped me out that her cat and dog were named after her parents because they had their essence or spirit. I didn’t connect with any of the characters and found the oldest sister unpleasant at best. Not to mention her 40 years of mourning, which seemed extreme.
The magic isn’t what I expected and was somewhat disappointing as was the first person narration. It can be done well but not this one, I don’t particularly care for addressing the audience directly.
There wasn’t much to the mystery and I found the ending disappointing.
The narrator was okay, but somehow the voice didn’t match the main character and other characters, well some seemed to whisper. It also more of a monotone reading.
I’m giving 3 stars because overall, I think this just isn’t for me. It’s a short title, which in this case worked out. I doubt I’ll listen to any others in this series… there are better options out there.

Lately, Kate has a lot on her dessert plate. She's launching a cookie-of-the-day challenge in the heart of Coral Cay, providing sweet treats for the reception of the town's handsome new veterinarian - not to mention dealing with tourists in town for a pirate festival and the surprise arrival of her former fiance, Evan, who seems determined to win her back. And if that's not enough, a skeleton has been found - in the backyard behind her best friend Maxi's floral shop. Kate knows Maxi could never hurt a fly.

A treat to listen to!
Revisado: 07-04-23
Can I live in Coral Key? The characters are lovely as is the community. Not a lot of strife, which I enjoy.
The mystery was around the body found in Maxi’s backyard… who was it… and Gentleman George Bly, the pirate. I figured out one but not the other.
Highly recommend this series. Narrator is one of the best.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 02-09-23
There is a lot to like about this story. The humour is good and fits with the story. I liked Dorie and Joe and Richard and Jenny and Gator Bait in general. The story had twists I didn't see coming. It is not a cozy and there is a hefty dose of romance to go along with the mystery.
I agree with others though... the narration left something to be desired. Definitely not South Louisiana. Typical cliche of Southerners speak slow and sound kind of dumb. We don't. This narrator was just distracting. There are two explicit sex scenes. They added nothing to the story and honestly not what I want to listen to when driving, but as others mentioned, easy to skip. Joe goes to see the minister, it added nothing to the story. It just kept going on and on and on. So, I eventually skipped to the next to last chapter to wrap it up. I was just about finished anyway, so I don't feel as if I missed much. I was sad at who the bad guy was, but thought the ending worked and with humour to boot.
Overall, I enjoyed it.

As much romance
Revisado: 01-10-23
There is more romance than mystery. Not bad. Not great. Guys are “hot” or other somewhat juvenile descriptions. Parents are ‘rents, which got a little annoying.
She did three killer unmaskings. Not just I think this is it, but literal confrontations.
I enjoyed the narrator, but will give thought before moving forward with the next one.
