Historia
Ken Follett's World Without End was a global phenomenon, a work of grand historical sweep beloved by millions of readers and acclaimed by critics. Fall of Giants is his magnificent new historical epic. The first novel in The Century Trilogy, it follows the fates of five interrelated families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they move through the world-shaking dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for women's suffrage.

This is an amazingly structured representation of the social, economic, and political realities of the nineteen-teens and -twenties; among the most consequential times in human history.

Historia
In The Signature of All Things, Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction, inserting her inimitable voice into an enthralling story of love, adventure and discovery. Spanning much of the 18th and 19th centuries, the novel follows the fortunes of the extraordinary Whittaker family as led by the enterprising Henry Whittaker - a poor-born Englishman who makes a great fortune in the South American quinine trade, eventually becoming the richest man in Philadelphia.

A marvelously thought provoking adventure
Revisado: 12-16-22
In TSoAT, Gilbert artfully slips a fictional existence and contribution into a most consequential phase of modern understanding. Her characters are very clearly formed in my mind and I am impressed by the arc of her contemplation on the meaning of human life. Stevenson’s narration and variety of voices have done justice to this exceptional work.

Now Paul Mulchrone finds himself on the run with nobody to turn to except a nurse who has read one-too-many crime novels and a renegade copper with a penchant for violence. Together they must solve one of the most notorious crimes in Irish history. Or else they’ll be history.

Thoroughly enjoyable
Revisado: 11-05-22
Always admire a narrator with consistency and command of numerous accents. Definitely the case here. And the narrative is both humorous and engaging. Given a finer-grained scale it might not rate quite so highly but want it to be clear I enjoyed and recommend this. I can easily see it as a movie.

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is on break from duty in Three Pines to attend the famed Winter Carnival up north. He has arrived in this beautiful, freezing city not to join the revels but to recover from an investigation gone hauntingly wrong. Still, violent death is inescapable—even here, in the apparent sanctuary of the Literary and Historical Society, where one obsessive academic’s quest for answers will lead Gamache down a dark path.

This is the most complex and unexpected of Louise Penney’s Inspector Gamache mysteries to this point. To my eye it is very nearly flawless.

Historia
When we think of fungi, we likely think of mushrooms. But mushrooms are only fruiting bodies, analogous to apples on a tree. Most fungi live out of sight, yet make up a massively diverse kingdom of organisms that supports and sustains nearly all living systems. Fungi provide a key to understanding the planet on which we live, and the ways we think, feel, and behave.

Beautifully conceived. Beautifully written. Beautifully presented. I was changed for the better by listening. Sheldrake teaches us that the mycoscape; perhaps the antithesis of the Matrix, is a place where we have found a ubiquitous friend who gives of itself to save us, if we believe. Enjoy. Be enriched.

Historia
One of the 20th century's enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize-winning career. The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.

Astounding language
Revisado: 01-11-22
Garcia Marquez filled the pages densely with a beautifully conceived story and powerful characters. I cannot imagine how such prose was translated to English, but the translator did a very convincing job. The narration is among the best I’ve heard.

Historia
Galapagos takes the listener back one million years to AD 1986. A simple vacation cruise suddenly becomes an evolutionary journey. Thanks to an apocalypse, a small group of survivors stranded on the Galapagos Islands are about to become the progenitors of a brave, new, totally different human race. Kurt Vonnegut, America's master satirist, looks at our world and shows us all that is sadly, madly awry - and all that is worth saving.

Vonnegut was ahead of his time, as a novelist, and possessed a vision of bad things that would come to, pass, and have. Provided that one accepts the origin of species as fact, they will be glad to have read this.

It is the height of summer, and Armand and Reine-Marie Gamache are celebrating their wedding anniversary at Manoir Bellechasse, an isolated, luxurious inn not far from the village of Three Pines. But they're not alone. The Finney family - rich, cultured, and respectable - has also arrived for a celebration of their own. The beautiful Manoir Bellechasse might be surrounded by nature, but there is something unnatural looming.

Flawless as always
Revisado: 11-25-20
I listen to a book per month and I enjoy mixing up authors and genres. I have been disappointed by books or narrators that I very much expected to enjoy. That has not been the case with any of Louise Penny’s Inspector Ganache mysteries, nor with the narration of Ralph Cosham. The series will fill a couple months per year for me for a few years to come and I am certain I’ll enjoy them all.
