Historia
Born to mentally unstable parents, Rachel Moran left home at the age of 14. Being homeless, she became a prostitute to survive. In Paid For, she describes, with intelligence and empathy, the fears that she and others had working on the streets and in brothels. She also speaks to the psychological damage that accompanies prostitution and the estrangement from one's body. At the age of 22, Moran escaped prostitution. She has since become a writer and an activist.

absolute must read

Women’s rights advocates, feminists, sex workers, supporters of the legalization of sex work, and those who use such services would all be benefited by the incredible insight provided in this book. The author has given us what is, I believe, by far the most honest, unflinching literary account of prostitution available today. This is TRUE feminist literature.

good story, difficult to get through
Revisado: 06-11-20
The narrator was entertaining when voicing the mother but through parts it was flat and grating (the children’s voices in particular were obnoxious) which detracted from the already less than stellar storytelling. The story overall was good, very sad, but any feeling of sadness was mitigated by the way it was told. The author seems to say “woe is me” with every sentence and punctuates the book with bragging about her accomplishments as an adult. You do not get the sense the author has worked through their childhood issues and is seeking approval from the reader while also saying “look what I did all by myself”.

Historia
Charlotte Davis is in pieces. At 17 she's already lost more than most people do in a lifetime. But she's learned how to forget. The broken glass washes away the sorrow until there is nothing but calm. You don't have to think about your father and the river. Your best friend, who is gone forever. Or your mother, who has nothing left to give you. Every new scar hardens Charlie's heart just a little more, yet it still hurts so much. It hurts enough to not care anymore, which is sometimes what has to happen before you can find your way back from the edge.

Historia
Zack McDermott, a 26-year-old Brooklyn public defender, woke up one morning convinced he was being filmed, Truman Show-style, as part of an audition for a TV pilot. This was it - his big dreams were finally coming true. Every passerby was an actor; every car would magically stop for him; everything he saw was a cue from "The Producer" to help inspire the performance of a lifetime. After a manic spree around Manhattan, Zack, who is bipolar, was arrested on a subway platform and admitted to Bellevue Hospital.

Best account of mental illness I’ve heard
Revisado: 01-07-20
This is a truly different mental illness memoir in the best possible way. It is read by the author and I think that made a difference in the immersion in the novel I experienced. Not the listen I expected but absolutely cannot recommend enough.

Historia
Sandra Allen did not know their uncle Bob very well. As a child, Sandy had been told Bob was “crazy”, that he had spent time in mental hospitals while growing up in Berkeley in the '60s and '70s. But Bob had lived a hermetic life in a remote part of California for longer than Sandy had been alive, and what little Sandy knew of him came from rare family reunions or odd, infrequent phone calls. Then in 2009, Bob mailed Sandy his autobiography.

Unique insight into schizophrenia
Revisado: 08-25-19
I absolutely loved this book. The added commentary and context, the dual narrators, the unique voice of Bob and his view of his world.. all come together in a portrait of a man whose life needed to be written.

Historia
Moving, harrowing, and ultimately uplifting, Lori Schiller's memoir is a classic testimony to the ravages of mental illness and the power of perseverance and courage. At 17, Lori Schiller was the perfect child - the only daughter of an affluent, close-knit family. Six years later she made her first suicide attempt, then wandered the streets of New York City dressed in ragged clothes, tormenting voices crying out in her mind. Lori Schiller had entered the horrifying world of full-blown schizophrenia.

Absolutely brilliant

I loved this book. It was fascinating and moving to hear a personal account of the experience of a psychotic disorder. Very eye opening, well written, and well narrated.
