Interesting premise; Disappointing execution
Revisado: 08-23-21
This was an interesting story. I wanted to like it, and to be honest, if there had been a little more exposition, I may have gotten more out of it. The world crafter here was full of really great concepts and culture. The problem is, it took me too long to understand and by the time I had a grasp on what was going on, the book was over. I think I would have enjoyed a lot of the interactions more, had I understood some of the finer points of the magic in this story.

America's national parks spring from an idea as radical as the Declaration of Independence: that the nation's most magnificent and sacred places should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone. In this evocative narrative, Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan delve into the history of the park idea.

Exactly What I Hoped For
Revisado: 06-29-20
Ken Burns did not disappoint! I’m really beginning to feel a pull to travel this summer, which isn’t going to happen thanks to COVID-19. I wanted something to describe the National Parks and their wonder, and this fit the bill perfectly. And, surprisingly, the narrator was amazing. I will absolutely be looking for something else from him!

Whatever, Canada.
Revisado: 06-29-20
Legitimately, the most boring thing I’ve heard in a while. I couldn’t make it through even half the story, and it was only 30 minutes long. I was really hoping for a story about the beautiful vistas and countryside of Canada. What we got was a way-too-long commercial about why Canadian education and healthcare is great and everyone should pay a 50% tax.

Good God in heaven, I loved this book! It even made me want to read the print version, before the movie comes out on home release. I got my old NES out to play the old games with my kids. So good!

The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history. A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. 1933 through 1945 was such a fascinating time, and to see it through the eyes of firsthand witnesses was awesome. If you're a fan of history, World War II, or other similar topics, I would absolutely recommend this book!

Historia
In the early 19th century, a series of murders took place in and around London that shocked the whole of England. The appalling nature of the crimes - a brutal slaying in the gambling netherworld, the slaughter of two entire households, and the first of the modern lust-murders - was magnified not only by the lurid atmosphere of an age in which candlelight gave way to gaslight but also by the efforts of some of the keenest minds of the period to uncover the most gruesome details of the killings.

Any additional comments?
This was a boring story. It's written like a scholarly work, not a gripping novel. Very dry, very dusty, and nearly unbearable. It's a shame, too, because this is a topic that I would have thought would have been very good.

Definitive, gripping, amazing.
Any additional comments?
Ann Rule wrote the definitive work on Ted Bundy, and her insights into Ted Bundy, the person, were amazing. This was one of those books I found myself listening to any time I had a few moments, which is not typical for me. Absolutely, I would recommend this to anyone.

It's 1998, and for years the old First Bank of Cleveland has sat abandoned, perfectly preserved, its secrets only speculated on by the outside world. Twenty years before, amid strange staff disappearances and allegations of fraud, panicked investors sold Cleveland's largest bank in the middle of the night, locking out customers and employees and thwarting a looming federal investigation. In the confusion that followed, the keys to the vault's safe-deposit boxes were lost.

The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

I loved this book! I loved the fact that they used three different women to portray the three main female characters in the book. I thought that was a brilliant way to set each of the women apart. The story was great, as well. I rarely listen to books outside of the car, but I found myself listening to this a lot. I nearly couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the movie. I would recommend this to anyone, and have.

War seethed across the planet. Machines soared through the air, churned through the seas, crawled across the surface, pushing ever forward, carrying death. Earth was engaged in titanic struggle. Germany, Russia, France, China, Japan: the maps were changing day by day. The hostilities spread in ever-widening ripples of destruction: Britain, Italy, Africa...the fate of the world hung in the balance. Then the real enemy came.

Cool book, but too long.
Revisado: 08-30-16
Any additional comments?
This was a cool story. I love alternate histories, and Turtledove is one of the best. My one complaint is that this was a long performance. I'm a casual listener, usually only in the car to and from work, and because this was so long it took me weeks to complete. This really isn't a complaint about the book, so much as an observation that this may not have been the best book for me. The story was great, but maybe save it for a long car ride. I will probably give the other books in the series a listen, eventually.
