Historia
Lady Jane Lovelace has conceived the idea of approaching the most notorious man-about-town, Lord Charles Welbourne, with a most unique proposition. When he counters her offer with a condition that he thinks will halt her impudence, much to the surprise of both, she accepts. A novel of passion and intrigue, The Westerby Inheritance is a thrilling installment in an emotionally charged romantic saga, all played out against a backdrop of elegant 18th-century society.

Not the usual
Revisado: 02-05-20
Rather, the story was the usual and like most of Chesney/Barton’s novels, a cut above the usual until the ending. I give the novel only three stars because of the abrupt and dissatisfying ending that leaves a whole series of plot points dangling. Highly frustrating.

Historia
Fiery, strong-willed Deb Grantham, who presides over a gaming house with her aunt, is hardly the perfect wife for the young and naive Lord Mablethorpe. His lordship's family are scandalized that he proposes to marry one of 'faro's daughters', and his cousin the proud, wealthy Max Ravenscar - decides to take the matter in hand. Ravenscar always gets his way, but as he and Miss Grantham lock horns, they become increasingly drawn to each other. Amidst all the misunderstandings and entanglements, has Ravenscar finally met his match?

Aborable and yet
Revisado: 07-02-19
As is usual for a Heyer novel, this one is sweet, witty, and well plotted. But, like many of her stories, it is based on sensibilities that are old-fashioned and can be difficult for the modern reader. To wit, a hero who treats our heroine well enough with acts meant to benefit her, but when he is angry, calls her horrible names. He is more than scornful. For me, his words were inexcusable under all circumstances.
The heroine, Deb, is rightly affronted by this wealthy entitled lordship. That she rejects Max — over and over again — is also right. (Spoiler alert, though of course we all know they will end up together.) In the end, when Deb finally accepts Her Man, I could only hope that her fiery temper and sense of what she deserves in terms of respect and equality will teach the arrogant Max Ravenscar a thing or two — or three — he still very much needs to learn.
I am a huge Heyer fan, but this isn’t one of my favourites. Nevertheless i give it four stars for all the other reasons we, her loyal readers, love the author’s stories.

As placid as a becalmed breeze
Revisado: 02-28-19
The author has the rhythms of Austen’s writing down. The problem (for me) was that there was little of Austen’s acerbic wit in evidence. The story plodded placidly along with little tension even if the plot was moving toward some. I assumed trouble would eventually showed up, but I got tired of waiting for it and moved on to a more bracing read.
This may be my failing and not the author’s. There is so much bad writing out there — credit must be given to the author’s competent prose. I may pick the book up again when I am in an easier mood.
