A brilliant psychological portrait, Madame Bovary searingly depicts the human mind in search of transcendence. Acclaimed as a masterpiece upon its publication in 1857, it catapulted Flaubert to the ranks of the world's greatest novelists and ushered in a new age of realism in literature.

A masterpiece. The narrator does it justice.

Of course a book like this is a must listen especially if you have not read it.
All depends on the performance and here the narrator doesn't disappoint.
I have read this a few times and it was a pleasure to find that listening to it brought a fresh perspective. It is a good translation which does Flaubert justice.
If you don't know the story you have a great pleasure waiting for you.
Great value.

I didn't plan to but I ended up listening to this straight through astonished at the privations that the crew survived.
It is well narrated and would make great listening for a family group.
What surprises me me most is that I had not heard of this before. I would have thought Hollywood would snap up a story like this. Especially as being Americans they would not have to change their nationality.
Good value.

Historia
One of the great literary classics of Western literature, Gulliver's Travels is a powerful satire on mankind, morals, and social habits, written in the form of a Travel in Wonderland.
The most celebrated novel by Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) is a culmination of his active years in politics with the Whigs and then the Tories.

An unalloyed pleasure - perfectly narrated
Revisado: 04-02-10
I read this as a youngster and on listening to it here I think much of it was over my head at that time.
It is the work of an astonishing imagination. There are modern authors and film makers that have made a good living out of a fraction that Swift brings before us. It is astonishing to think that this is nearly 300 rears old.
It can be enjoyed at many levels. A robust political satire, a moral inquiry into ways of organising society or just a good yarn.
The early 18th century prose is a delight to a modern ear used to the business speak and mindlessly twaddle that daily assaults us.
The narrator's voice has the right maturity and he does a fine job. It would not be difficult to imgine him wearing 18th C garb.
In all a good listen.

Historia
The Ancestor's Tale is a pilgrimage back through time - a journey on which we meet up with fellow pilgrims as we and they converge on our common ancestors. Chimpanzees join us at about six million years in the past, gorillas at seven million years, orangutans at 14 million years, as we stride on together, a growing band. The journey provides the setting for a collection of some 40 tales.

For the converted
Revisado: 02-10-10
For those who accept Darwin's ideas this is a an entertaining and interesting book. Mr Dawkins does like to preach sometimes but he has a pleasant and engaging style and these passages are not uniteresting.
A pity that it is abridged.
For those (Americans) who don't accept Darwin, Dawkins's erudition will leave you seething. So best give it a miss.

Confusing and a little disappointing
Revisado: 06-12-08
I read these lectures as an undergraduate. It is a good few years since and I still retain a great interest in physics. Even so try as I might I could work up no great enthusiasm at all for these recordings. The lectures were not given as radio lectures so they simply don't work. I kept falling asleep. There are books that are much better value on the site.
A shame.
