Great first story and McCaddon is superb Narrator

Friends,
I am NOT a religious person - but I can see the crucial function that it played in middle ages communities. The King (for most) is far away but the church is on hand, the preacher local.
Author Royal includes real history and real people (from History) while weaving murder mysteries into the lives of the religious folk. Be they Nun, Monk Abbot, Abbess or Novice, They are alll suspect until they are not.
Wanda McCaddon is top shelf in UK narrators.
Loved it.

Historia
England, 1065: The Saxon kingdom is under threat of invasion at both ends. From the north comes Harald Hardrada of Norway intent on pillage, while across the Channel, Duke William of Normandy is about to enforce his claim to the throne. Between the two lie the villages and townships defended only by part-time armies maintained by the Earls of Wessex, Mercia and Northumbria, barely united under King Harold Godwineson. It falls to brave and determined young men like Will Riveracre and Selwyn Astenmede to stand firm against whichever marauding invader reaches them first.

In late March 1944, as Stalin’s forces push into Ukraine, young Emil and Adeline Martel must make a terrible decision: Do they wait for the Soviet bear’s intrusion and risk being sent to Siberia? Or do they reluctantly follow the wolves - murderous Nazi officers who have pledged to protect “pure-blood” Germans? The Martels are one of many families of German heritage whose ancestors have farmed in Ukraine for more than a century.

And that's when Eric met Peety: an overweight, middle-aged, and forgotten dog who, like Eric, had seen better days. Great Story- shame about outsourcing responsibity.
Revisado: 12-15-22
Eric's book tells an excellent story of personal renewal , but, I wished he would throw away the crutches. His constant desire or need, (whichever suits) to outsource resposibility to someone other than himself is annoying and a little dispiriting.
Everything Eric achieved was supported by a great Medical Practitioner but carried out by him. He read a book that he says helped (Bible) and took on extra responsibiliity (adopting a dog). Bottom line, he got good advice and used it welll.

Historia
Thinking that she has been summoned by German immigrant Agnes Otto to usher a new life into the world, midwife Sarah Brandt is greeted by the news of an untimely death instead. It seems that Agnes' beautiful younger sister, Gerda, had fallen into the life of a "charity girl". Caught up in the false glamour of the city's nightlife, she would trade her company and her favors for lavish gifts. And now she was dead - victim, no doubt, of one of her "gentlemen friends".

Excellent naration gives story a real boost!!
Revisado: 11-14-22
I have to close off my sense of disbelief, to go along with the concept that a 'fallen from the upper class" New York midwife, can be part of a Murder investiagtion duo with an ornery Irish Cop at the turn of the 20th century BUT this is fiction.
What drove me to writer this review was a comment by another reviewer calling Callie Beaulieu "worst narator ever". I have listened to over 2000 ttitles ranging accross all areas of Fiction, especially Murder Mystery and Callie Beaulieu does a tremendous job bringing the Female characters to life and taking umlikely plotlines and giving them some reality.
I am on my third Gaslight Mystery and while im unlikely to (listen) read them all - they provide a degree of escapism and enjoyment for people like me who have free time and an open mind.
Over 90% of my listens are with British, European or Australian narators and real professionalism is needed to keep me listening to my North American cousins. Callie Beaulieu succeeds because she is a true professional.

Historia
A nineteenth century French priest discovers something in his mountain village at the foot of The Pyrenees which enables him to amass and spend a fortune of millions of pounds. The tale seems to begin with buried treasure and then turns into an unprecedented historical detective story - a modern Grail quest leading back through cryptically coded parchments, secret societies, the Knights Templar, the Cathar heretics of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and a dynasty of obscure French kings deposed more than 1,300 years ago.

And then life in the village turns volatile and old hatreds threaten to erupt into violence.

Revisado: 06-20-22
I was captivated by the story and the narrators. I know from my safe and comfortable life, that my knowledge of the lives of people in India is almost Zero. Yet, I can recognise oppression and fear even from 5000 miles away. Both permeate the lives of Kashmiris today in 2022.

"The Woman on the Orient Express explores the bonds of sisterhood forged by shared pain and the power of secrets."

When first I read 'Parnassus' i started over and read it again. The turn of phrase demonstrated for me a love of language that endeared me to the story and the Author. I rushed to find and buy book 2.
Imagine my surprise and delight when I discovered that one of my favourite narrators Nadia May had done Parnassus. Of course when I realised, this week, that both of Mr Morley's books were FREE for us Audible members I added both to my Library and started Parnassus. Bring on the 'Bookshop'.

Don't hesitate, Anna always delivers on the setting and the mystery. England in the middle ages was a political nest of vipers. Anna's characters fit that bill.
