Fantastic
Revisado: 02-15-25
Fantastic book that I am tempted to start reading again after finishing it today.
There is a lot, and perhaps even too much. I wish in some ways I could listen to the specific stories of the different characters by themselves as well as the beautiful combined story that this is.

A terrible return to a beloved world
Revisado: 11-19-24
I was several hours into this when I had to go check who wrote it. I was horrified to find that it claims that Hickman and Weis wrote this, because the writing style and characters are not reflective of those that are show in Chronicles.
It isn't even that I am fondly remembering Chronicles as I am literally in the middle of reading Chronicles.
It is the second time I am listening to this book, and both times I have been pretty horrified by the shoddy story that was put into this.
The narrator I cannot recommend either. She seems to read each sentence with no bearing on what the previous or next sentences are. This limits her ability to evoke any emotion with the words that she is going through. She also chose a horrific voice for Tasselhoff.
Overall, I regret reading this book. I regret reading it a second time and think I must have tried to burn it from my memory. I chose not to continue the Lost Chronicles series because of how poor this was last time, and am going to do the same thing this time.

Kell is one of the last Travelers - magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes. As such, he can choose where he lands. There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there's Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. There's White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. And once upon a time, there was Black London...but no one speaks of that now.

Interesting concepts. Never was great.
Revisado: 06-18-24
It is a passable fantasy book.
It has great ideas presented within it, but never grabbed me with them.
I am very certain that there are many people who like it, and they should. There is nothing wrong with the book, it just never grabbed me.

In Manhattan, a young grad student gets off the train and realizes he doesn't remember who he is, where he's from, or even his own name. But he can sense the beating heart of the city, see its history, and feel its power. In the Bronx, a Lenape gallery director discovers strange graffiti scattered throughout the city, so beautiful and powerful it's as if the paint is literally calling to her. In Brooklyn, a politician and mother finds she can hear the songs of her city, pulsing to the beat of her Louboutin heels.

Interesting Ideas
Revisado: 03-21-24
Book full of interesting ideas, but aspects of it did not resonate with me that are stylistically completely acceptable, just not my book. I have recommended it to others because of some of the very cool ideas that are in it.

Superpowered Mary Sue plus graphic sex
Revisado: 01-20-24
This book is not my cup of tea. I listened to the first half of it years ago, but was stopped cold when the author interjects a graphic sex scene into it. I forgot I had listened to it, and turned it on the other day. The whole time I'm thinking this all sounds familiar, and figured out what had happened after listening for a bit.
The start of the world that is presented is good, and I appreciate the writing that the author has.
However, everyone that acts as opposition to the character ends up painted as being a very bad person, even those that are not supposed to be bad people. The character comes across as a Mary Sue because of this and other aspects in the book.
In the end, it is interesting at parts, boring at parts, and unpalatable at parts. I wouldn't read it again, but appreciate that the author seems to enjoy superheroes and is sharing that.
In the end, I would not recommend this to anyone, but it obviously has a following.

After winning a candidacy for the most prestigious award possible, Kayo's not-so-far-gone past comes back full-swing, determined to show the world that changing the name doesn't really change the girl. Facing off against friends, foes, and everyone in between, Karen must prove once and for all that she truly is some kind of hero.

Passable
Revisado: 01-20-24
The title is accurate. The book is passable in the fact that you can listen to it and it passes enough bars not to turn it off, but it is also completely a book you can pass over and not have missed out.
The Mary Sue adventures of KO continue in this book, but now she has even more power and no one can really stand up to her.
The character is forced to be right, and even when she is shown as being overbearing and apologizes for what she did, the situation brought about exactly what she wanted anyway.
I won't listen to it again, and would have sooner spent my time reading better books.
However, it isn't terrible, just not good either.

Elim Garak shines through
Revisado: 01-06-24
Thank you to everyone who was involved in this book to allow my favorite character from Star Trek to be able to write about their sordid life. The fact that Andrew Robinson narrated this book makes it so perfect and allowed me to step into the shoes of the character.
If you are a fan of Cardassians, Garak, DS9, or just in depth character views, this is a book that I would recommend.

The second novel in the wildly popular First Law Trilogy from New York Times best seller Joe Abercrombie. Superior Glokta has a problem. How do you defend a city surrounded by enemies and riddled with traitors, when your allies can by no means be trusted, and your predecessor vanished without a trace? Crown Prince Ladisla is poised to drive them back and win undying glory.

A Slow Start to an Excellent Series
Revisado: 01-06-24
I found this book to be enjoyable, but it was very slow. I had come to Abercrombie after being told that he wrote fantastic fantasy. However, this book did not sell me at first. When I was around 15 hours in, I went looking to see if this series was for me in the end or not. I discovered that others found the first book to be slow but interesting (as I was finding it), and that things picked up in the next two books of the series.
I am very glad that I stuck with this book and continued with the series because it is one of the best series that I have read for a long time.
Highly recommend to all readers of fantasy literature who don't mind a slow start with very character focused narrative.
