Dark fantasy goes hardboiled in Book II of the hard-hitting Grimnoir Chronicles by the New York Times best-selling creator of Monster Hunter International. The Grimnoir Society’s mission is to protect people with magic, and they’ve done so - successfully and in secret - since the mysterious arrival of the Power in the 1850s, but when a magical assassin makes an attempt on the life of President Franklin Roosevelt, the crime is pinned on the Grimnoir.

"Compelling" is an Understatement
Revisado: 02-05-24
I get Audible books to entertain myself while commuting or doing household chores. This means that I listen to books an hour or so at a time.
This is the second Reacher book which I have listened to pretty much straight through, spending an entire day doing not much else.
One of the things I like best is that as the stories start, Reacher himself doesn't seem to actually know what the mystery is, and he drags us along with him as he gets in deeper and deeper.
I also, um, I can't say "like", I appreciate Child's villains. Tripwire's is the best so far. Powerful, creepy, and appalling.
Going to listen to something else now, I guess. I do have a life to lead. But it's going to be a struggle.
I must add: Outstanding narration from McClain. Entirely free from excessive voice acting and verbal tics, his performance fades into the background and lets us concentrate on Reacher's story. Thank you, sir, for being a transparent conduit. That's a rare talent.

Historia
With indifferent parents, Iona Sheehan grew up craving devotion and acceptance. From her maternal grandmother, she learned where to find both: a land of lush forests, dazzling lakes, and centuries-old legends. Ireland. County Mayo, to be exact. Where her ancestors’ blood and magic have flowed through generations - and where her destiny awaits. Iona arrives in Ireland with nothing but her Nan’s directions, an unfailingly optimistic attitude, and an innate talent with horses.

Overly Dramatic
Revisado: 09-24-22
Please just read the story. Trying to play all the parts rarely works. Here it's intrusive, and often bleeds out of the dialogue into descriptions and exposition. Sometimes sentences and paragraphs gush into each other. Accents are OK.
NB: I'm male, if it matters. SF and fantasy fan.

Historia
Paul Kennedy, award-winning author of The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers and one of today’s most renowned historians, now provides a new and unique look at how World War II was won. Engineers of Victory is a fascinating nuts-and-bolts account of the strategic factors that led to Allied victory. Kennedy reveals how the leaders’ grand strategy was carried out by the ordinary soldiers, scientists, engineers, and businessmen responsible for realizing their commanders’ visions of success.

Logistics, Not Strategy, Tactics, or Technology
Revisado: 02-05-21
A good overview of five major actions in the Second World War--but from the view of the logistical "problem solvers", not the big name generals. I expected, though, that Kennedy would be writing more on the technical problems, and the stories of how they were solved. Instead, Kennedy mentions the technical and strategic innovations and the problems they solved, without saying much about how those solutions were developed, or the technical details of how they worked. I will say that I feel better equipped to learn more about the War.

Classic Space Opera; overblown performance
Revisado: 11-22-20
Great space opera of alien societies, interstellar trade, and interspecies treachery.
Trader Captain Pyanfar Chanur overlooks a crucial bit of crew discipline, and receives an unlooked for cargo, triggering three volumes of intrigue and adventure, and a next-generation sequel, Chanur's Legacy (which may be my favorite of the series).
There's a larger story being told, too, of four different alien species coming to terms with each other, and with a fifth just coming in, more advanced than most, occupied with a civil war (outlined in the Union-Alliance cycle) roiling more space on its own than the four of them combined. And that's just the oxygen breathers; gods know what the methane folk think of all of it.
I love the operational chatter, but could do with either more varied and much sharper cussing, or far less of it.
Pearlman's narration is overly dramatic, and the attempted ethnic accents distract, rather than enhance. I do like the intercom effect used when appropriate.
