Historia
The irascible A. J. Fikry, owner of Island Books - the only bookstore on Alice Island - has already lost his wife. Now his most prized possession, a rare book, has been stolen from right under his nose in the most embarrassing of circumstances. The store itself, it seems, will be next to go. One night upon closing, he discovers a toddler in his children’s section with a note from her mother pinned to her Elmo doll: I want Maya to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about such kinds of things. I love her very much, but I can no longer take care of her.

Historia
Published in 1904, The Golden Bowl is the last completed novel of Henry James. In it, the widowed American Adam Verver is in Europe with his daughter Maggie. They are rich, finely appreciative of European art and culture, and deeply attached to each other. Maggie has all the innocent charm of so many of Jamess young American heroines. She is engaged to Amerigo, an impoverished Italian prince; he must marry money, and as his name suggests, an American heiress is the perfect solution.

Comprehension
Revisado: 02-24-16
Would you try another book from Henry James and/or Katherine Kellgren and Simon Prebble ?
This is only the second book by Henry James that I have read.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I did not finish the book because it was hard for me to comprehend the book.
Did The Golden Bowl inspire you to do anything?
Could not comprehend.
Any additional comments?
I can usually understand books pretty well, but this one was not one of them. I did not finish this book. The first one was Daisy Miller by Henry James, and I did comprehend that one pretty well. In fact, I talk to other people about it.

Historia
A golden statue comes to life and, with the help of a reluctant swallow, gives away everything he has. A fierce giant forbids children to play in his garden -- then realizes that only through sharing will spring ever come again. In these rich fables by Oscar Wilde, author of The Importance of Being Earnest, characters learn that kindness and giving are the greatest powers of all.

Oscar Wilde paints with words
Revisado: 03-01-12
If you could sum up The Happy Prince and Other Tales in three words, what would they be?
well written fables
Who was your favorite character and why?
the swallow was my favorite character
What does Stephen McLaughlin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
inflection by this narrator give a good idea of how Oscar Wilde wanted his stories to sound
Any additional comments?
I liked this book of short stories because it gave pause to think about the beauty that creates a place in the imagination and to consider the moral of the story. Oscar Wilde brilliantly wrote with a political or religious thought but painted it as beautiful little story. I am now a fan of Oscar Wilde's books.

What does Ali Ahn bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Her voice has a touch of antiquity to it without sounding old, being that the narrator was a young woman in the 1930s.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The edge of my seat came when the narrator and Rita were confronted on the road.
