Historia
Shari Franke’s childhood was a constant battle for survival. Her mother, Ruby Franke, enforced a severe moral code while maintaining a façade of a picture-perfect family for their wildly popular YouTube channel 8 Passengers, which documented the day-to-day life of raising six children for a staggering 2.5 million subscribers. But a darker truth lurked beneath the surface—Ruby’s wholesome online persona masked a more tyrannical parenting style than anyone could have imagined.

Amazing
Revisado: 02-04-25
Beautifully written, responsibly sharing her own perspective and not telling the stories of her siblings. Super proud of Shari’s ability to allow herself to grow beyond what has happened to her family and be her own person.

Historia
When the U.S. began its withdrawal from Afghanistan and the Afghan Army instantly collapsed, Homeira Qaderi was marked for death at the hands of the Taliban. A celebrated author, academic, and champion for women's liberation, Homeira had achieved celebrity in her home country by winning custody of her son in a contentious divorce, a rarity in Afghanistan's patriarchal society.

Amazing story
Revisado: 05-30-24
Impressed by author’s ability to share multiple perspectives effectively and emotionally without having to add dramatized scenes, dialogue, or characters. Rarely walk away from a story this action-packed without feeling like narration/timeline was messy, confusing or all over the place, but this was well organized. It is clear that the author cares deeply about conveying these people’s experiences truthfully.

I don’t usually do this
Revisado: 05-26-23
I’ve never written a review for a book before. I actually feel bad writing this, but it needs to be said. If you are someone who is unbothered by books that are poorly researched, don’t waste your time. I don’t expect perfection; I’m not fact checking a fiction book. A little twist on the reality of how things actually work isn’t going to wreck a whole book for me. But when the entire book is based on a storyline that the author clearly has done zero research on, it’s painful. I spend this entire listen screaming internally, “THAT’S NOT HOW ANY OF THIS WORKS!” And I’m no legal expert. You can’t watch a few episodes of Law and Order and then write an entire novel about a homicide investigation, trial, and death penalty sentencing without doing any other research. The story lost its plausibility long before it was revealed to me that it wasn’t even going to end with the plot twist I was promised, just the revelation that I’d been lied to the entire time. I couldn’t even say I was surprised at that point, but it was the mushy cherry on top of a sugar free sundae.

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

I actually lost sleep
Revisado: 03-26-19
It was so hard to stop listening to this story, I binged on it and finished it in a fraction of the time it usually takes me to finish a book of this length. Though my heart broke more times than I can count, this beautifully written story and its deeply developed characters will stay with me for a long time. Thank you, Khalid Hosseini.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.
