It was ok
Revisado: 03-17-25
I liked her first book more. This one seemed rushed. There were some good tips in here. For example, the section on goal setting, while not original, was useful. But, unfortunately there is a LOT of fluff IMO as well. Too many people get lost in planning, daydreaming, setting up their "ideal" office space and the like and there are too many exercises like that. This may best serve very young adults with absolutely no entrepreneurial experience. Even then, include some additional practical resources. Note: Harvard Business School has some free courses on YouTube.

Cedric Kyles is not just a gifted comedian and entertainer, but a talented writer as well. Who knew?! Even though the fictional story is based on a beloved family member, I hope that he finds other stories to tell. This was enjoyable from start to finish and his narration made it a wonderful treat.

Not a horror story but fans of "Get Out" or "Us" will appreciate the tale. The authors' discussion at the end made the story even more interesting.

Maybe next time?
Revisado: 06-12-23
The story was well written and well performed. But, the theme and underlying messages about the incapacity of Black people to sustain healthy, affirming relationships was disappointing. The police brutality arc was also triggering without offering redemptive solutions.

Historia
Growing up Black in rural North Carolina, Ray McMillian’s life is already mapped out. But Ray has a gift and a dream—he’s determined to become a world-class professional violinist, and nothing will stand in his way. Not his mother, who wants him to stop making such a racket; not the fact that he can’t afford a violin suitable to his talents; not even the racism inherent in the world of classical music.

Exceptionally well done!
Revisado: 12-21-21
Gabrielle did an excellent job with this book. Here one can really appreciate her intelligence and literary skill which blend seamlessly with her relatability, passion and transparency. At first, I thought her vulnerability might be an act to sell books. But, as the book progressed it became more of a Brene Brown inspired master class, connected in moving ways to broader themes of social justice. Her moving narration of the work was icing on the cake. 5 stars.

"Ethnic" Liquor adds and odd discussion
Revisado: 07-31-21
Jill "discovers" she "light-skinned" and focuses on this the whole time. I am confused, does fame lighten your skin tone? SMH. And the liquor adds felt like exploitation spice sprinkled on top☹. Wasn't feeling this one.

Revisado: 07-01-21
It wasn't bad as a first novel. It touched on some timely topics and did a great job of using a contemporary tone. Some story angles could have been developed a bit more. But, it will get you through a commute, beach day etc.
