Exceptional writing
Revisado: 04-20-25
Read this book when it first came out and I think I prefer that to listening to it. The reader is too gruff most of the way through for my ear, but the last third or so I could listen to over and over, Wonderful writing.

Historia
August 1816. England is in the grip of what will become known as the Year Without a Summer. Facing the twin crises of a harvest-destroying volcanic winter and the economic disruption caused by the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the British monarchy finds itself haunted by the looming threat of bloody riots not seen since the earliest days of the French Revolution. Amidst the turmoil, a dead man is found hanging upside down by one leg in an abandoned chapel, his hands tied behind his back. The pose eerily echoes the image depicted on a tarot card known as Le Pendu, the Hanged Man.

Needs a better reader
Revisado: 04-17-25
Since Davina's retirement, this series suffers from the lack of a really good reader. Hope they find one before the next book!

Historia
Beth and her gentle, kind husband Frank are happily married, but their relationship relies on the past staying buried. But when Beth’s brother-in-law shoots a dog going after their sheep, Beth doesn’t realize that the gunshot will alter the course of their lives. For the dog belonged to none other than Gabriel Wolfe, the man Beth loved as a teenager—the man who broke her heart years ago. Gabriel has returned to the village with his young son Leo, a boy who reminds Beth very much of her own son, who died in a tragic accident.

Looking forward to more
Revisado: 04-12-25
Looking forward to more from this author. Although many aspects of the book could have been more developed, as it stands it's very good. The prose and atmospehere are mostly delightful. The relationship between Gabriel and Beth takes up a little too much real estate and the characters are not quite developed enough. But for its length the themes and characters are probably as good as can be.

Historia
March, 1815. The Bourbon King Louis XVIII has been restored to the throne of France, Napoleon is in exile on the isle of Elba, and Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, and his wife, Hero, have traveled to Paris in hopes of tracing his long-lost mother, Sophie, the errant Countess of Hendon. But his search ends in tragedy when he comes upon the dying Countess in the wasteland at the tip of the Île de la Cité. Stabbed—apparently with a stiletto—and thrown from the bastions of the island's ancient stone bridge, Sophie dies without naming her murderer.

Missing Davina
Revisado: 11-11-24
I started listening to this series because of Davina Porter. I was looking for books she read at the time. She's a tough act to follow and, for me, Jenny Sterlin isn't measuring up. I've heard her before and she is no different here -- her voice has too narrow a range and is too distinctive. I do enjoy the books so probably will keep listening, however. Just miss Davina. She was a rare talent.

Thoughtfully and sensitively read, this wonderfully written novel draws the characters and their various stories together so well. I hope this isn't the last we see of the residents of Crosby, Maine. They are at once a trial and a comfort.

Historia
In Marriage, a History, historian and marriage expert Stephanie Coontz takes listeners from the marital intrigues of ancient Babylon to the torments of Victorian lovers to demonstrate how recent the idea of marrying for love is - and how absurd it would have seemed to most of our ancestors. It was when marriage moved into the emotional sphere in the 19th century, she argues, that it suffered as an institution just as it began to thrive as a personal relationship.

Historia
Pat Conroy is without doubt America's favorite storyteller, a writer who portrays the anguished truth of the human heart and the painful secrets of families in richly lyrical prose and unforgettable narratives. Now, in Beach Music, he tells of the dark memories that haunt generations, in a story that spans South Carolina and Rome and reaches back into the unutterable terrors of the Holocaust.

Disappointing book, even worse narrator
Revisado: 05-08-24
This seemed like a few books rolled into one. Thought it would never end, even at the end. Usually I like Pat Conroy's writing better. Beach Music felt overblown and somewhat disorganized. I know that many of his readers like it best, but I'm not one of them. Jonathan Marosz's voice is hard on my ears as well. Nearly gave up a few times.

Not as good as others
Revisado: 04-11-24
This story needed to be tightened up, in my opinion. Felt the same about The Searcher. I hope she hasn't reached the point in her career where her publisher thinks that her books are selling so well she doesn't need an editor anymore. I don't care for the narrator's deep voice. Not versatile enough for portrayal of all the characters.
