Stop smiling. These are supposed to be serious books.

The overall plot was pretty decent. It intermingled current events with a complex magical world. It could have a great series, but a few things that dragged it down for me.

First was the massive info dumps. There are large portions of all these books where the characters just sit in a room and info dump. It’s a lot of telling and little showing.

The second issue is all the smiling. There are some scenes where characters are described as smiling over and over again. It was too much. There are other descriptors or actions that can portray happiness outside of smiling. Sometimes the smiling didn’t even fit the situation, and I was left thinking, “this is a serious situation . Why would you be smiling right now?”

The book starts out with a bang (literally) with a murder suicide & then slows down. A large portion of the book is dedicated to the isolation of one formerly proud woman. It’s frustrating to watch her as she’s backed into a corner. Especially when the reader knows it’s happening & the character doesn’t.

There were several times that I was so annoyed. I kept thinking “such a cliche,” but there is a twist at the end that saves it. I think it was worth the read, but I didn’t enjoy myself. I was just too frustrated.

Were you looking to read a cheesy romance with no conflict or tension for the first 75% of the book, and a sudden, sharp twist with no foreshadowing or clues? Well, then, you’ve come to the right place.

I don’t know how many times I rolled my eyes in the first 75% of this book, but it was a lot. Gross gross cheesy romance with bad dialogue and annoying characters. Mr. Snuggles? Barf.

It is not a “thriller” until the end, when there is a twist. You won’t see it coming - I can promise you that - because there was absolutely no foreshadowing of laying of clues aside from several references from characters saying there was something wrong with other characters. There was never any evidence to support the position.

To sum it all up, horrible. This was a horrible horrible book. I may have nightmares about it, ones where someone forces me to reread it and I cover my eyes shouting, “no, no, not again. Please, no. I’ll do anything.”

It’s that bad.

I do not like messy, rushed endings. That was my primary problem with this book. Everything else was excellent. That’s why I gave it a 3 star review. It would have been 5, and even could have been 5 stars with a little tweaking. But it wasn’t. I was disappointed.

I had a hard time with the underlying theme here. When a woman says, “no,” it means no. The idea that a man thinks he knows what’s best for her despite her protestations kinda pisses me off.

I do, however, understand that there would be no story without the two main characters taking these positions, so I was willing to give it far more leeway as a work of fiction. It is meant to be fake after all. I also found the personalities and general quirkiness of the female characters, Hero and Sunday, helped balance out that “men know best” sentiment. The women were all intelligent, hard working, self sufficient, and also mostly immune to the wooing.

On a side note, George W. Bush makes an appearance in this book, which is sorta hilarious. I am an American and I remember how hated he was during his presidency. Now he seems like a tame house cat compared to the feral beasts that ravage American politics these days.

The characters are well-developed and I like the whole woman power vibe of the book, but the plot was a bit fantastical.

A quick, fast paced, book about homelessness and those that are different. I can’t wait to read the next in the series!

Wonderfully original. Fantastic characters. An addictive story about family, beer, and changes to both through the passage of time.

I don’t like beer. I don’t even drink beer. But I loved this book.

A modern day Prince Charming story where everyone lives happily ever after. Of course, it’s completely unrealistic when it comes to American politics, but I loved the characters & the story so that didn’t matter so much to me.

A little predictable and sappy, but a good read/listen. It made for a nice summer book.
