Historia
Dead or alive? Not a hard question, and pretty easy to figure out either way. Usually. Except I've somehow woken up in a place called Hell, and I'm not entirely sure I died first. I thought it was a practical joke. Until a warrior woman tried to kill me, and I rescued an elf and a succubus from slavers. Then I started to realize something strange was going on. I didn't know the half of it. Turns out, this Hell is being terrorized by an evil Wraith King, and he’s hell-bent on bringing all of Hell under his dominion.

Not quite what I expected
Revisado: 06-15-20
I received the Audible version of this book from AudioBook Boom in exchange for an honest review.
Not at all what I expected. The writing was actually pretty good, and the story was compelling enough to keep listening to all the way to the end. The narration was very good, too. I will probably continue this series when the next audiobook is released.

DNF @ 30%
Disappointed with this one. There's not much "hardcore horror" here except the stomach-turning horror of what one person can do to another. Several of the stories felt incomplete and left me hanging for some sort of conclusion.

In this brutal, fast-moving thriller from Ralph Dennis, the author of the legendary Hardman series of crime novels, Kane finds himself caught between the mob, Cuban revolutionaries, and his own government as he seeks retribution for a man murdered for uncovering small-town corruption...and justice for another man on death row, falsely convicted of raping and murdering a child.

More Ralph Dennis, please!
Revisado: 10-10-19
I received this from the published through Audiobook Boom in exchange for an honest review.
This one confused me; it seemed like it was very disjointed and didn't flow well. And then I read that it was actually two books blended together. It would have been helpful if there was a break between the two plotlines.
While not as good as the Hardman series, Ralph Dennis writes well in this book. Shawn Compton's narration was very good, but there were times when the characters' voices all seemed to blend together, making it difficult to determine who was speaking.

4 stars
Not at all what I expected, and it was very good. This may sound strange in describing a "vampire" book, but there are hints of Les Misérables by Victor Hugo hidden in the story, especially when the main character is talking about redemption and God's work in a man's heart.
I really enjoyed this one.

I know I'm in the minority here, but this just didn't work for me. The writing felt... I'm not sure what the right word is, but like the author was taking normal dialogue and descriptions and replacing the words with what she maybe considered "better" or "smart". The audiobook was driving me crazy, because people don't have conversations like that, without contractions and without slang or colloquialisms.
I may not have noticed it as much if I were reading instead of listening, but I'm giving up. The premise sounded good, but the execution was off.

Cold War twists and Turns
Revisado: 09-17-19
I received this from the publisher, Brash Books, and Audiobook Boom in exchange for an honest review.
This was pretty good, and not quite what I was expecting. It was suspenseful and had several twists and turns that weren't really surprises, but entertaining nonetheless. At times, it reminded me of Journey Into Fear by Eric Ambler.
The ending was very shocking, and threw me for a bit. Not bad, just sort of a jolting end like coming to the end of a fast roller-coaster ride.
I'll definitely be looking for the next book!

Wally Roux is a teenage genius with a big imagination and a big heart, who just moved to Savannah, GA, from Maine with his mom, who adopted him when he was an infant. In this charming and sweet solo performance, Wally investigates what is causing a number of strange events and occurrences. He explores and gets lost within space-time - an infinite, indefinable, and mysterious void that you can’t see but when you slice into it you can feel it.

Each tale is a magic trick, luring you toward the light while leading you down an ever-darkening path. There is hope mingled with horror, and that s Chizmar s secret power. His storytelling always beats with a huge, passionate heart. Stephen King says he writes terrific stories served with a very large slice of disquiet pie, and with The Long Way Home, Richard Chizmar has taken his evocative and compelling storytelling to an entirely new level.

Wide range of genres in short-story format
Revisado: 08-02-19
I received this from the narrator, Matt Godfrey, through Audiobook Boom in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 stars rounded up.
This is my first experience with Richard Chizmar, other than his co-authoring Gwendy's Button Box with Stephen King. Most of the stories were pretty solid, and I especially liked the essay on why he started writing and his "happy birthday" essay to Stephen King. There was one thing that bothered me though: almost every story ended very abruptly. There was no let down from the high point in the plot, just an abrupt ending. Very jolting. I guess I was drawn into the stories, and the endings jarred me back to reality.
The narration was very good, too. I definitely recommend this anthology for horror, mystery, and even sci-fi lovers.

Easy Town!
Revisado: 07-25-19
I received this from Audiobook Boom in exchange for an honest review.
Another great entry in the Easytown series, but bittersweet. This one, like the first two, ties all of the wild plot lines into a satisfying ending. And what an exciting ending! I will say that it wasn't unexpected, but I was hoping that it would end in different fashion.
Here's one reader hoping that this isn't the last we hear of Easy Town!

Historia
Retired pro football star Ed Cross did most of his scoring between bed posts with other player's women, including Hump's ex-girlfriend. That was bad enough. But, just to rub it in, Cross sends Hump an x-rated birthday skin flick of him celebrating in bed with two women. Hump goes looking for blood...and finds it. Cross is murdered, and Hump becomes the prime suspect. Hardman works to clear Hump and discovers plenty of murderous hate for Cross out there...from the top of the sports world to the pits of Atlanta's illegal gambling scene...and revealing it could get them both killed.

Hatred for the Victim!
Revisado: 07-12-19
I received this audiobook from Brash Books in exchange for an honest review.
Book 5 in the outstanding Hardman series, this one was quite different that the previous four. Here, Hardman’s partner Hump is a suspect in a brutal murder, along with about half a dozen other suspects. The victim was hated by most of Atlanta, and no tears were shed for this man.
The biggest difference with this one is the ending, which was quite sudden and unfulfilling. Bad guys were caught, but the questions and answers were left hanging, and there was no neat, little bow on this story. Still, it was another outstanding entry in the series, and I’m looking forward to reading/hearing the rest of the books.
