Ugh, this was tiresome
Revisado: 10-07-24
I first picked up this book around 20 years ago, then promptly abandoned it when it turned weird and boring.
Well, teenage me was right the first time, this book is an unreadable mess.
It starts well enough, with an interesting setup, and then starts rolling downhill, picking pace as it goes. The plot is nonsensical, the characters all talk in neverending quipping, it's like listening to a really long episode of the Gimore Girls, and the narrator drawlssss on.
To mix things up, the author throws in some time travel, a few orgies and a whiff of paedophilia. Ah, and there IS an actual cat.

It's a unique story, very interestingsetting, a protagonist who just accidentally wandered into a magical plot.
The russian thing though...nope. It comes off absolutely wrong.

El, Orion and the other students are faced with their final year—and the looming spectre of graduation. El is determined that her chosen group will survive, but it is a prospect that is looking harder by the day as the savagery of the school ramps up. It gets so tiring
Revisado: 09-29-23
This book is filled with teenage angst, it's exhausting. El is way too dramatic inside her head. She's also way too powerful for the setting. Orion, on the other hand, has no personality at all.
This is the second book in the series, and both books ended with stupid cliffhangers. The stupid cliffhanger of book one served for nothing except more angsting in book two, so I'm assuming the current cliffhanger is fake too.
I might read book three if I end up with spare credits or there's a sale, but I'm not in a rush to do so.

Just boring!
Revisado: 04-19-23
This book is 24 hours long, with very little actually happening in it.
The setup was good, I was intrigued. But then it devolved into just another, sticky, vampire love story.
There are some interesting ideas here, lots of potential, but it's all overshadowed by the sticky love story and extreme Mary-sueism.

Angsty waste of time
Revisado: 01-07-23
This is such an angsty teen-drama production.
The story is just terrible, none of it makes sense, not even a little bit.
Kudos to rhe narrator, though, she captured her role perfectly.

Historia
Emmeline lives on a remote island with her father, who teaches her about the natural world through her senses. What he won’t explain are the mysterious scents stored in glass bottles that line the walls of their cabin, or the origin of the machine that creates them. As Emmeline grows, however, so too does her curiosity, until one day the unforeseen happens, and Emmeline is vaulted out into the real world—a place of love, betrayal, ambition, and revenge. To understand her past, Emmeline must unlock the clues to her identity.

Marci learned, after decades of speech therapy, that parents are the best language facilitators. Parents already know their children better than any therapist can. They know what their children are thinking and feeling due to the natural, intuitive connection between parents and their kids. Marci’s language facilitation program equips and empowers parents to see the speech learning from the child’s perspective.

Feels like I've just paid $10 to read an ad
Revisado: 02-03-20
I have conflicting thoughts on this book.
On the one hand, the proposed technique does sound interesting. But, I feel that it wasn't fully fleshed out. The explanation of how to facilitate talking, was pretty rudimentary.
The author then refers you to her website and tries to sell her services.
Also, I was troubled by the first part of the book, which goes on and on about how "the system" tries to slap an autism diagnosis on every child with any problem. I'm not from the US and have no experience of this, and it sounds like a scare tactic designed to attract clients.

Historia
We may not realize it, but children are hyperaware of money. They have scores of questions about its nuances that parents often don't answer, or know how to answer well. But for Ron Lieber, a personal finance columnist and father, good parenting means talking about money with our kids much more often. When parents avoid these conversations, they lose a tremendous opportunity—not just to model important financial behaviors, but also to imprint lessons about what their family cares about most.

Not quite what I expected
Revisado: 10-01-17
This book starts ok. It talks about allowance and budgeting and chores... but then goes off to talk about charity, elite schools and the monetary struggles of the rich and the VERY rich.
All the personal stories of the super rich who find creative ways to unspoil their kids? I don't need that. Talk of exclusive schools and camps? Nope, don't need that. Prattling on and on about charity? Nuh-uh. Found it quite alienating, tbh.

Revisado: 08-13-16
The author admits in the book to having no expertise whatsoever in the subject, and just researching it in order to write a book. And it shows!
Most of the advice is bad, perhaps even psychologically damaging for some people, based on nothing but personal experience, and not worth the $4 I paid.
