Historia
Jane Austen fan Amelia Bennett sneaks away from a dull tour of an English country manor, only to run into a man more dashing than Mr. Darcy himself. About to lose his ancestral home to family debts, charming aristocrat Tom Calder invites his American guest to join him in drinking his way through the estate’s priceless wine collection. But when they wake in his bed the next morning, they’re convinced that in their drunken haze they witnessed a murder. Problem is, the body has vanished and no one believes them.

fun story but mismatched narration
Revisado: 08-01-24
ì liked a lot of aspects of this book but I think the narration was not a great fit. both narrators are great, but neither really captured Amelia's tone and it Mae her seem weird and childish.

I generally find that most modern period mysteries don't stack up to the originals but this one was pretty good! I enjoyed it

Historia
Finding and identifying a pirate ship is the hardest thing to do under the sea. But two men—John Chatterton and John Mattera—are willing to risk everything to find the Golden Fleece, the ship of the infamous pirate Joseph Bannister. At large during the Golden Age of Piracy in the seventeenth century, Bannister should have been immortalized in the lore of the sea—his exploits more notorious than Blackbeard’s, more daring than Kidd’s. But his story, and his ship, have been lost to time.

Historia
Murder in the 19th century was rare. But murder as sensation and entertainment became ubiquitous, with cold-blooded killings transformed into novels, broadsides, ballads, opera, and melodrama - even into puppet shows and performing-dog acts. Detective fiction and the new police force developed in parallel, each imitating the other - the founders of Scotland Yard gave rise to Dickens's Inspector Bucket, the first fictional police detective, who in turn influenced Sherlock Holmes and, ultimately, even P. D. James and Patricia Cornwell.

I admit I am not normally a fan of dramatized books because they cut so much of the prose. but this? this version was so stunning. especially impressed by Catherine Tate's (Donna from Doctor Who). highly recommended

Historia
All her life, Spensa has dreamed of becoming a pilot. Of proving she's a hero like her father. She made it to the sky, but the truths she learned about her father were crushing. The rumors of his cowardice are true - he deserted his flight during battle against the Krell. Worse, though, he turned against his team and attacked them.

an excellent sequel
Revisado: 01-14-23
if you liked the first book then you need to read the second. no duh. my only complaint is that the thing that gets Spensa to the place is a bit...contrived. I could tell that Sanderson had started things off going in a direction that was probably going to lead to a longer, more complicated path than what ultimately happened. And I get why, I just don't like seeing behind the curtain as a reader that way. I also feel like it could have been achieved slightly differently and more sensibly but this is a very small gripe. I really did enjoy the book immensely. stayed up for nights tensely cross stitching while listening, occasionally laughing or exclaiming to myself and awakening my partner accidentally.

painfully good
Revisado: 01-08-23
two of the characters in this story shine so brightly and are so fun and relatable, especially as an extremely headstrong person with autism, that I frequently laughed out loud and then tapped my husband on the shoulder to quote a passage to him, asking him, "who does this remind you of??" it's me. the author has done a phenomenal job writing a teen female character who never did anything I felt was tp stupid to bear and that's quite a feat. if you liked this book, read Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir and if you liked that one then read this.

a wonderful book and fans of North and South will especially like it since it deals with the same sort of setting, time period and challenges only from the perspective of the lowest class rather than a wealthy middle as family that falls on hard times. the narration is so good I could just eat it up
