Loved this

I tried to read this so many times and couldn't get into it.
The audiobook however is read in such a personable style, that it made it much more digestible. I still had to back track a few times, but overall this was great. I don't know why people have an issue with the narration.

This did not disappoint. Thoroughly enjoyable. This is one of the rare ones that followed me out of my car - I'm a commute-listener only, usually.

Brilliant narration
Revisado: 11-28-24
I got this just because I love listening to Julia Whelan, and her newer book is superb.
This was less so. The protagonist isn't a likeable person, and I always struggle with this in books.
I just didn't like her, and the sidekicks are amusing but very flat and predictable. However the setting, the narration, the visuals, are all fantastic.

Historia
When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia. But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.

Incredible narration, good yarn
Revisado: 11-28-24
This the first Slater book I've tried.
While I don't like being deceived as the listener, it was a very good tale that kept me engaged.
The narration was superb, except for, again, some efforts at misdirection.
I have some questions about a plot point, but maybe I just missed it when listening.
Overall very enjoyable.

This is the second Slater book for me- I loved the previous one, though I had.some unanswered questions. I felt maybe I'd just missed a few details.
in this book it was worse. I had so many questions.
Even though the ending is spelled out, a bit awkwardly, I still felt there were huge holes.
The narration is superb though..

The narration- stunning
Revisado: 10-13-24
This is a book I probably would have put down if I'd read it. But the narration got me hooked!!
Wonderful.
I'd class this a holiday listen and I burnt to a crisp doing just that.
It was impressive to make the journalist so annoying and dense- which was the only drawback.

A sad but worthwhile listen
Revisado: 10-13-24
It's hard to hear MP slightly slur his way slowly through this book. I listened after knowing how he died, which makes it very bittersweet.
It felt bitingly honest. He doesn't really portray himself kindly.
it does jump around a little and it's sometimes hard to know which exact moment he's referring to, but other than that, it's a tale well told.
Poor Matty.

Historia
The compelling, inspiring (often comic) coming-of-age story of Trevor Noah, set during the twilight of apartheid and the tumultuous days of freedom that followed. One of the comedy world's brightest new voices, Trevor Noah is a light-footed but sharp-minded observer of the absurdities of politics, race and identity, sharing jokes and insights drawn from the wealth of experience acquired in his relatively young life.

a must read (listen)
Revisado: 10-13-24
I'm pretty sure it was Trevor Noah that I heard on the radio, years ago, as I drove home on a cold winter night. I was captivated- he was hysterical.
This book isn't hysterical- it's shocking. It's a tale told well and with affection, but Jesus. What this guy went through.....
I remember championing the end of apartheid.....we were taught what it was, just as it was ending. I remember Mandela waking free.
This book is told from the inside, and reminds me very much of a Hungarian translation from inside the holocaust.
The nearness of it. The telling of it almost like it was normal....because it was, for him.
I recognise that the story is told with humour, but none of it is funny.
Well worth a listen.

I've been listening to audiobooks 1-2 h, 5 days a week for a year. I choose carefully.
I've listened to some brilliant books but this was the first that I was actively thinking about and looking forward to every day. it made my commute a dream.
I'm on the epilogue now, "and THEN" I'll probably just go back and listen again.
Can't fault it.

The desert planet Arrakis, called Dune, has been destroyed. Now, the Bene Gesserit, heirs to Dune's power, have colonized a green world—and are tuning it into a desert, mile by scorched mile. Chapterhouse Dune is the last book Frank Herbert wrote before his death: A stunning climax to the epic Dune legend that will live on forever.

I nearly didn't listen to this
Revisado: 08-17-24
I disliked Heretics so much, that I almost stopped there. That was a polarising book- a favourite for many but if you're like me, I'd hate for you to miss out because you had to slog through Heretics and want to give up.
I'm 30 mins from the end of Chapterhouse now....
This book was brilliant and is ending well so far.
I never liked Vance's scratchy females- but his Bellonda is unbelievable- incredible. I feel I've met her. And his Odrade is sympathetic. He is the voice of Dune.
All the same, I was glad of the female narrator for an interrogation scene that is my favourite in all of the 6 books- i was gripped. it was brilliant.
A third narrator, sadly, didn't do a great job. His voice was petulant, and despite the dozens of hours of Vance audio, he pronounces several key terms differently- which is so jarring. I'm pretty sure he can't even say 'Tleilaxu', but uses a K instead.
Worse, unlike the female narrator, who uses Idaho's established accent, making it feel seamless- this guy doesn't.
This was the only negative, but he's not in it too much. I don't blame him- he should have been asked to be sympathetic to the established audio.
If you're hesitating after Heretics- do take the plunge and finish the saga! You'll be glad you did.
